The royal family

The Royal Family - how they are listed on their website

I went to the royal.uk website One of their "click parts" is called "The Royal family" When I clicked on it I kinda chuckled at the "ranking" and distribution of large photos vs small

The first 3 large photos to the left are
King Charles
Queen Camilla
Prince of Wales

3 smaller photos to the right are Princess of Wales, Earl of Wessex, Countess of Wessex

As you go down it ends up looking like this

King Charles...................................................................Princess of Wales
Queen Camilla...............................................................Earl of Wessex
Prince of Wales..............................................................Countess of Wessex
Princess Royal................................................................Duchesss of Gloucester
Duke of Gloucester......................................................Princess Alexandra
Duke of Kent...................................................................Duke of Sussex
Duchess of Sussex........Duke of York...................................................................

So Harry and Andrew have "billing" after both the Duke/Duchess of Gloucester and Duke of Kent/Princess Alexandra whilst Harry has a " small" photo Andrew still gets a large one they put Megan after Harry yet have the Duchess of Gloucester before her husband. and Megan is " next" to Andrew yet unlike the rest of them on the left side she doesn't have the " large" photo..

I know I may likely read too much into this but it made me chuckle how far down both Harry and Andrew are now. Also, wonder if H&M had not left how would they have been billed? Near where the Earl and Countess of Wessex or?

It's a mess on a computer - it's currently designed to look right on a phone or vertical mobile device. They need someone to sort out the responsiveness to work for both types of screens.

Before QEII died she had main billing at the top and then (on a PC/computer screen) working couples were on a line with each other with the 'principal' of the pair getting the larger photo - Prince Charles large photo, Camilla small one next to him. Prince William large, Catherine next to him smaller. etc etc

It got a bit weird with Anne and Duke of York because neither of their spouses are working royals so they shared a line with Anne getting the smaller image.

Then H&M left the working royals bit, and Andrew 'stepped back' from duties. So they shoved them down at the bottom of the list - really not sure why they don't just remove them and make it a list of the working royals.

When the Queen died - the King got top billing. And then Camilla got a big picture as the Queen - but something in the way the website backend is working, instead of giving Camilla her own line and then having everyone else back in their 'pairs' - everyone has just moved up in their old slots - which means the spouses are all mismatched.

I hope that after the Coronation they have a big revamp and sort it out.

But look on a phone and you'll see the order works better - Andrew is at the very bottom with the Sussexes just up from that.

That's interesting @wordler I didn't realise the difference it made on a phone vs a computer (and yes I am using a computer) so the sizing is different once on the phone...

Still finding the " line up" interesting and yes a working royals would be better than calling it the " royal family"

Interesting. I don't see why the Wessexes are higher than Anne. Surely she should be higher, as she's older than Ed (and does more work?)

Well it's partly listed them in order of precedence - and Edward comes before Anne because of royal male primogeniture - it, unfortunately, wasn't backdated when they changed it for George's birth.

But it's so weird now that Andrew and the Sussexes are still there but down at the bottom because of their non-working status. I hope the plan is to do a complete rework of the website after the coronation. The computer version is a bit embarrassing for something that represents our head of state.

Seems more sensible to leave off the last 3 as they are no longer working royals. I guess it's to keep the door open.

Enko · 24/02/2023 21:01

Its the partly listed that got me. Seeing the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester Princess Alexandra and the Duke of Kent before Duke and Duchess of Wessex and Prince Andrew seems a odd choice. I agree better to make a list like current working royals. and perhaps one called the royal family.

I think I would have preferred it the way the Swedish royal house have done it listing the immediate family then other members of the royal house and after " other members of the royal family"

It seems to be there is a distinction made on whether one is a working royal or not.
It also seems like their site designer should correct the large page format.

AmandaJonah · 28/02/2023 11:50

It is embarassing.

WinnieTheW0rm · 02/03/2023 19:27

It's working royals, by seniority, followed by non-working royals, by seniority, cutting off at Andrew

Which seems a bit odd as isn't Beatrice a CoS as well and drawing a line under them would make more sense in terms of roles. But I suppose with the York princesses it's better to have both or neither

Thepurplelantern · 02/03/2023 19:34

Aw I think that is lovely. Loved seeing the Sussex’s still there. Good for Charles you can be guaranteed he is playing the changes.

Thepurplelantern · 02/03/2023 19:35

Overseeing the changes grrr
