The royal family

I'll put my colours on the mast:

Tl/dr: I post here because I'm interested in the royal family and I don't know anyone in real life that is.

Longer story: my mother was fascinated - and had a very good knowledge - of the contemporary (to her) royals. She also disliked them enormously: "It's ridiculous! Some poor old woman, without two pennies to rub together, saying 'God bless you, Queen!'.

I'm probably a very watered down version. I'm a republican but feel that, while they're here, I might as well enjoy the spectacle. I'm certainly not a revolutionary; I enjoy my comfort too much.

I don't know anybody that's particularly interested in them these days. Generally, I would say, most people I know are mildly pro and I have some great discussions with my daughters re clothes.
But no one feels as strongly as some here. And, while that can be scary, the discussions can also be fascinating (sometimes in the way of a car crash...).

I can see that a lot of people now see it as a sort of reality show (Skip Charles! Vote William/Harry/Anne in!). I'm also surprised that people can take so much interest but have so little knowledge about how the institution works or of its recent history.

I could bang on a lot more, but won't because this thread will doubtless sink below the waves!

@Coxspurplepippin

The old saw that people get more conservative as they age is no longer true

There are solid financial reasons for that .
Look into it . The young are not changing . They have less of a stake in society

Novella4 · 25/02/2023 10:49

@Serenster

It is a fact that only the UK continues to have a coronation

Other monarchies stopped years and years ago
The UK is behind the times on this and so much more

But what do you base that on. People have become more conservative as they age for generations, probably every generation since people were a thing. There has been, what, one generation where some young people haven't had the housing opportunities their predecessors had. That's not enough to make any kind of prediction. And you're saying 'the young are not changing '.......well, that's because they're still young innit.

Mainly because so many people seem to have factual misconceptions about the Royal Family, so I like to put them right.

Novella

Thanks for taking the time to answer.

The key is to read a range of sources and keep your critical thinking head on

That sounds like good general advice for lots of subjects, especially as I was thinking about news in general, not just the royals.
It's very difficult to avoid our own prejudices - be they political, national or whatever - and to avoid looking at things through that lens (handy new phrase Smile).

Yep.

Like the post above restating the bumper tourism income myth.

Fickle... VERY fickle... but I'm only here for the royal fashion threads which we have somehow managed to keep free of argument and controversy, as it is JUST about the fashion! But in reality I'm not a huge fan of the system at all, and if I had to be pushed I would happily see a republic here instead of a monarchy. But I can't see it happening in my lifetime.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/02/2023 12:03

There isn't one guaranteed (media) source - They are all compromised in various different ways
The key is to read a range of sources and keep your critical thinking head on

An excellent approach, Novella, though even with a greater range we're stuck with the usual journalistic thing of "a source said ...", which I guess is where the thinking heads come in

Personally I use them all as a prod to find out more if interested enough - for example whether there's any actual proof of what's being claimed, whether such-and-such spoke the reported remarks themselves or if it's being said on their behalf and so on

I confess I don't use Twitter though; occasionally I'll glance at a link and the sheer level of craziness on there is just too much

I'm neither for or against, the royal family for me has been in the background my whole life, just something that's there and probably will always be .
I've never watched a royal wedding or avent on tv but I did see some of the coverage of the Queen's death and funeral, I was surprised to find I was terribly upset and cried, I would have told people I didn't care but apparently I did .
I post here because I find others insights interesting and informative!.
I'm also not above enjoying some harmless gossip.
