The royal family

In her own words: Nelson Mandela's granddaughter speaks out about Harry and Meghan

I don't usually post in the Royal Family topic or comment about Harry and Meghan, but I think this makes very interesting reading for those on either side of the fence or none:

It is time to tell the truth about Harry, Meghan and my grandfather – Nelson Mandela
It is true that I feel terribly disappointed whenever the Mandela name or face is used for commercial purposes without any benefit to the vision he stood for

Please read her article in The Independent before commenting, rather than just commenting on the headline I have quoted above. TIA.

Can't read the article. Sorry. But they said she said it's all getting a bit boring and silly The meeting was ages ago anyway.

SeasonFinale · 28/01/2023 14:18

It's behind a pay wall but my understanding is she says she never criticised them. Is that the gist of it? Why have you labelled your post with a clickbait style title and not actually said what it says in the article? Are you the journo wanting us to pay to sign up your article?

doubleshotcappuccino · 28/01/2023 14:19

To summarise because it's a pain to have to try and register to read .. she's saying that the irony of it is that her words were misquoted to attack a woman of colour ( Meghan) whom she actually has a great deal of admiration for.
TLDR: media twists words to beat H and M over the head with - normal right wing press tactics that's why they left but gives the racists a small and steady supply of bullets to keep firing at them

BeautifulJust · 28/01/2023 14:19

Why can't you read the article, Viviennemary? It's not behind a paywall. I'm not sure I fully understand your following comment, but if I do then it does not fit with what she is saying at all.

You have to register to read - it's annoying --

doubleshotcappuccino · 28/01/2023 14:21

I'm not going yo add anymore . Love H and M but there's been one thread to many and I'm on Mumsnet for tea break and levity not a fight

doubleshotcappuccino · 28/01/2023 14:21

to**

LookinUp · 28/01/2023 14:26

She is only relevant because her Grandad was Nelson Mandela so we must all listen to her proclaim? No thanks.

So many people complaining about H&M exploiting their family issues and dragging it out endlessly…and then exploiting their families and dragging it on endlessly.

I couldn't read the article without registering for a subscription and I am not doing that. So what she is saying is No I didn't criticise Harry and Meghan I think they're wonderful. Great. Ok then fine. Anyway it's old news. Even Spare is now. What's next.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 28/01/2023 14:37

yep out of date news.

BeautifulJust · 28/01/2023 14:42

I always want to hear the truth about what we are being fed by the media, even if the truth is uncomfortable or seems to some to be about 'yesterday's news'.

OP posts:
Unsure33 · 28/01/2023 14:42

Misquoted? That’s some misquote . It was specific words against them ? So let’s see proof about where those very specific criticisms came from ?

daretodenim · 28/01/2023 14:49

The British Royal family "hounded" Meghan out? Really? I thought Harry had said it was more the press and courtiers? And now that the RF isn't actually racist - and they never said it was?

I follow foreign news sources and they are almost always less than well-informed about anything to do with the RF. I appreciate this woman feels her words were taken out of context, and she is right to state that. But as soon as she starts repeating nonsense, it undermines what she says..and ironically perpetrates exactly what is she's trying to correct!

Anybody who comes into contact with H&M in any way would be well-advised to state whatever they personally experienced, correct whatever the press misreported/misrepresented, but not to repeat anything from H&M themselves, because it invariably changes.

Her message about being misreported is interesting and important. But I'm so fed up of reading people repeating things they don't know for sure as a way to attempt to strengthen or further their point, that as soon as I read something they're parroting, I stop.

ittakes2 · 28/01/2023 14:53

I am not sure why you care? Unless you were there how will you ever know what was really said?

AliceOlive · 28/01/2023 15:05

I’m glad she set the record straight. (Although I didn’t know anyone said she had criticized them, I thought it was another family member.)

I appreciate what she is saying, but wonder what she thinks about their stated interest in having a role overseeing the Commonwealth countries? For me it seems like they truly want a larger role in the Royal Family, then they will stop with the public criticism. And a rather paternalistic and colonial role at that.

This is really egregious if Ndileka Mandela truly was misquoted this way. It’s from the recent news piece and repeated by many outlets, including plenty of reputable ones. The few I looked find cite an interview with “The Australian” but I can’t find it.

She and H&M really do deserve an apology if this is a complete fabrication.

watchfulwishes · 28/01/2023 15:58

I think the fact Ndileka mandela has gone on record to deny the false quotes attributed to her is good.

The media have been absolute lying toe rags for a very long time.

SighsTheNewWord · 28/01/2023 16:00

I appreciate what she's saying but I'm not sure H and M are truly trying to change the world in the sense of her powerful speech here, but more for their own benefit, including being seen as the next so and so.

One wouldn't want to go into the RF in the first place if one truly felt a certain way about them. Unless she thought she could change them from the inside out. That would be extremely naive.

But as Ndileka has said, and I agree, their speaking out has inadvertently caused many to look deeper into the RF and has probably helped more than a few people to get out from the RF's backsides and give their mouths a much-needed rest from the royal arse-kissing.

Mynameiselvispresley · 28/01/2023 16:06

I think it’s a good read and it is extremely crass the way she has been misrepresented.

Im sure this thread will soon descend become unreadable, but I thought I’d highlight one of post for those with self awareness:

“She is only relevant because her Grandad was Nelson Mandela so we must all listen to her proclaim? No thanks.”

On a thread about the RF? C’mon the jokes write themselves

LadyWithLapdog · 28/01/2023 16:16

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. She has a powerful message.

Viviennemary · 28/01/2023 16:24

I read the original article.mand unless she was completely misquoted she does appear to criticise them.

BeautifulJust · 28/01/2023 17:04

I'm sorry that MNHQ have now removed the whole article I quoted in a pp as a breach of copyright. I do wonder about the motives of who reported it.
