If you die without a will and there are no surviving relatives who can inherit under the rules of intestacy, the estate passes to the Crown. This is known as bona vacantia. The Treasury Solicitor is then responsible for dealing with the estate. The Crown can make grants from the estate but does not have to agree to them.

So effectively the Royal Family have control over how your money is spent. Please make a will, especially if you have no surviving relatives who can inherit. Leave it all to a charity if you want but not the Royal Family.

I have diddly squat to leave but if Kate wants to buy a fancy new coat with whatever is left, I'm ok with that. 😂

But seriously, do your research! What you're saying just isn't true.

There's a whole royal department for destroying wills so that Windsor gets new double glazing. When Charlotte turns 16 it'll be her work experience project.

😂😂😂😂love this!

You're talking utter shite OP, and the reason I know you're talking utter shite is because I have wasted many a morning hour watching "Heir Hunters" on BBC.

Maybe find out the difference between "His Majesty" and "His Majesty's Treasury".

Bonkers

CathyorClaire · 26/01/2023 10:28

TBF bona vacantia applies to both of the duchies and cash from intestate estates passes to whichever royal is holding the golden keys to them at the time.

Another great reason for said duchies to be absorbed into the rest of the Crown Estate.

I might just make a will in that case, make sure it all goes to the little horse that stood at the top of the walk in Windsor.

🙄🙄🙄

Stop name changing & posting utter shite!!

Perhaps it’s the “treasure” part of the word that was confusing 😆

In those circumstances I’d bequeath all my worldly goods to Harry so he could go large and buy himself a brand spanking new sofa and dog bowl.

The existance of the two duchies is brilliant. They were set up hundreds of years ago for the purpose of ensuring that the Monarch's personal expenses are met quite independant of government. They protect the royal family from becoming political, accepting bribes etc. which means they can support non popular charities etc. One duchy is for the Monarch's personal needs and the other for the personal needs of the Prince of Wales. To have them disolve into the Crown Estate would destroy their purpose. As far as moneys from people who leave no will; I would prefer the money to go to the royal family. They choose deserving charities and give generously. The charities are listed, their financials are published. I have less trust in the government of the day.

Such ignorance. The Royal family can't touch it.

Or that if money weren't spent on the Coronation it would be used to fund the NHS.

Not always it's not always do one vs another it could be used eg instead on defence budget ect

CathyorClaire · 11/02/2023 20:33

They protect the royal family from becoming political, accepting bribes etc.

Odd then that they get the chance to vet proposed laws affecting their interests and get them changed so they don't. And that the king has only swerved questions over the fencing of gifts and the acceptance of plastic bags containing millions in cash by pinning both on hapless lackeys.

they can support non popular charities

Their most enthusiastic support is reserved for their own charities. Probably explains why some 76% of the others never see their royal patron from one year's end to the next.
