Is this the beginning of the end for the royal family?

There are some awful accusations in the Duke of Sussex's book, I cannot see the royal family responding to any of these accusations and I'm wondering if it will cause resentment if the accusations are not addressed and dealt with?

Nope, they've survived far worse than a whining duke. It's Harry that comes out looking the worst.

purpledalmation · 08/01/2023 20:54

No. To respond will just feed the troll. Let him get on with being angry and jeolous and lashing out. He might just implode

StormzyinaTCup · 08/01/2023 20:54

No, he has been good PR for the royal family. Harry has scored a spectacular own goal (and he likely doesn't even realise it).

cue Alanis Morrisette 'Ironic'

TangledWebOfDeception · 08/01/2023 20:55

No. Of course not.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 08/01/2023 20:57

Nope, they have played it absolutely right by not responding. And have experience of dealing with whining dukes.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 08/01/2023 20:57

No. The monarchy will survive despite someone's moaning. They're doing the right thing by not responding.

DerangedViper · 08/01/2023 20:57

No, the Royal Family policy of no response is long lasting, so will not cause "resentment"

CathyorClaire · 08/01/2023 20:59

Sadly not.

If they can survive friendships with both convicted and un-convicted sex offenders, fencing gifts, cash in carrier bag scandals and stinking bloody pens sabotaging their every move among other damaging claims, a self-pitying, whining fifth in line hasn't got a chance of holing them under the water.

RF are not ones coming out looking like fantasist, that would be Harry. The same Harry, who claims to love his kids but has painted a target on their backs that will be there for their whole lives. I bet his security has to double to pay for fatwa Taliban have out on him. Think how long ago Salman Rushdie upset them. 34 years where he has had to be almost reclusive. Now they still got him 34 years later. He will be a target for life just like Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet will. RF on other hand coming out with dignity intact.

trucklebrunch · 08/01/2023 21:01

No, they will not respond and carry on exactly as before. They won't lose anything except...sadly, a much loved family member.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 08/01/2023 21:02

I find it hard to believe that they could cause any more resentment than he's shown already. PH doesn't want accusations dealt with (even assuming that they have some substance and could be) he wants his family to totally abase themselves and admit how awfully, awfully badly they have treated him and his wife and to take 'accountability.'

Mrsfussypants1 · 08/01/2023 21:06

No I think the royal family will be fine. Harry and his family not so much, his stupid comments about the people he has killed has probably put him and his family unit in danger now. Why didn't anyone stop him saying this?

Blossomtoes · 08/01/2023 21:13

RF 100/Harold -100

This is worth a decade of Rolls Royce PR for the RF. The wonder is that they’ve put up with him and covered up for him for so long.

AutumnCrow · 08/01/2023 21:15

I would like to see the end of the monarchy / sovereign as head of state system, and the establishment of a republic & president model. But it is essential it is done in a mature, democratic, planned and dignified way. It will take time, and the will of Parliament.

The thought of H&M being able to meddle in constitutional and parliamentary affairs to the extent that they could initiate 'the end of the monarchy' is frankly delusional IMO.

Phrenologistsfinger · 08/01/2023 21:17

I think it could be the start of unravellling things.

Shazammm · 08/01/2023 21:21

Well said autumncrow

DownNative · 08/01/2023 21:22

Not a chance.

People are increasingly viewing Harry as someone who has an axe to grind, whinges too much and has a victim mentality.

The less the Royal Family say, the more rope Harry will hang himself with.

"Do not interrupt the enemy when they are busy making a mistake."

Quite!

Is this the beginning of the end for the royal family?
mathanxiety · 08/01/2023 21:35

Nobody has suggested that they would meddle in a political way.

Since the Glorious Revolution, the monarchy has been a constitutional fiction maintained in place in order to give authority to Parliament.

In order for the fiction to operate as part of the constitution, the monarchy has to enjoy the support of the population. Since the social changes of the 1950s/60s/70s, and the decision of the Duke of Edinburgh to allow the press to play a part in capturing and broadcasting the 'mystique' of the monarchy, the RF have been riding the back of the tiger.

The slippery slope toward oblivion has been getting slipperier and slipperier since then, mainly because it appears members of the family have actually believed in their own carefully curated mystique, but also because 'he who lives by the press dies by the press'. It's a force that has to be kept fed. They have long passed the point where mystique turned into celebrity, and I'm not talking about H&M.

It's only a matter of time now before the relevance of the entire concept comes under serious question, because their only visible function is to churn out PR.
