The royal family

Always referring as ‘my husband’ and ‘my wife’

I’ve noticed whenever Harry and Meghan talk about each other, they always say ‘my husband’ or ‘my wife’. Meghan particularly.

We all know who their spouses are, why not use their name? Whenever I talk about my DP to others, they all know who he is, so I say his name.

I only ever say ‘my DP’ to people who don’t know him.

I find it really irritating- is it an ownership thing? A reminder that they’re married? Like, ‘this is my HUSBAND’ that we have to be reminded just how absolutely important that title is.

we all know who you’re both married to! I am generally not fussed either way with them, but this has always stood out to me and makes me irrationally annoyed 😂

anyone else?

I perfer that to the way she calls him "H" 😩 for some reason it really grates in me!

Agreed! Something about it makes it feels forced, as though she had to have a cute nickname for him or something

This! How irritating l. It's like look at me I'm so down to earth and down with the kids and the commoners

steff13 · 07/01/2023 23:49

My father-in-law does that and I also find it very odd. I only call my people "my __" when I'm talking to someone who doesn't know their names

Mrsweasleysclock · 07/01/2023 23:51

I say my husband. Even when talking to family.

YourWinter · 07/01/2023 23:54

They’re both insufferable the minute they’re being recorded, no matter what they say.

I say my husband. Even when talking to family.

Why? Presumably they all know you are married! Why not call him by his actual name.

EllaB22 · 08/01/2023 00:26

The H thing makes me cringe . . Seems immature.

The my husband / my wife gives me controlling and ownership vibes.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 08/01/2023 01:04

I think it's just a royal convention - the Queen never talked of 'Philip' in public; Charles doesn't talk of 'Camilla'.

I like saying/being called “my husband/wife” to some extent in such situations (not always, but sometimes!). I never really thought about it tbh, but I guess on some level it’s because I like being married and still kind of enjoy us getting to use these terms.

JamSandle · 08/01/2023 01:33

I'm not really sure. It stuck in my craw a bit too but im not really sure why.

GlassOnions · 08/01/2023 02:19

The only time I've ever known someone to do this was with a family friend. She always referred to him as my husband, even when sat right beside him in a group setting which was just weird. Never used his actual name in all the years we knew them. It was downright strange and felt very forced. In the end it turned out it was. She was deeply unhappy and although the marriage was not fully forced on them, it was highly orchestrated / arranged by the parents. They've got 2 children and are now divorced.

PinkPomeranian · 08/01/2023 14:17

I'm not a fan of it either, but as it seems to be quite common for my own American friends to use this terminology I wonder if could be more common over there?
