Why is Louis in shorts?

It’s December.

If a regular parent sent their child out in shorts in December they’d be called neglectful.

They really wouldn’t. My son had to wear them through the year to school until he was 11 and nobody cared.

My kids wore shorts all through primary. In winter they wore long socks, in summer they wore short socks. State primary, totally normal here. If a kid falls over they scrape their knees rather than tearing their trousers. No different to girls wearing skirts.

Young boys use to always be dressed in shorts with long socks. I'm in my 60's, when we and previous generations, were children there wasn't enough money to keep buying longer trousers as boys grew or replace them if they tore them running around and falling over, with shorts and skirts for girls hem lines just rose as children grew and often only got replaced when an older sibling out grew their clothes. A boys first pair of long trousers was something to be proud of around the age of 10. Finance is obviously not an issue for the Royals but they were probably just being traditional.

Roussette · 26/12/2022 07:50

It's a tradition thing, the shorts. Goes back centuries to boys wearing knickerbockers, coats with velvet peter pan collars etc, boys can't wear long trousers until they're 8. Upper class tradition and all of that. Quite middle class for a young boy to wear long trousers. I know I know... just ridiculous buy hey ho, I suppose the RF think this is what we want to see, it looks a bit odd to me.

There was a family interviewed on the news, who can e down especially from Gateshead - I can't imagine !!

They were obviously Jewish. Not their holiday. If I had forced holidays I didn’t celebrate I’d probably think that was a good idea too. A lot of the locals go, then sell photos to newspapers. Some go because it is their Christmas in the UK. To each their own.

George didn’t have them. It’s a personal thing. I’ve had loads of children in my class who wear them all year round. Even older children.

Because he is older than 8 and the eldest child he is allowed to wear long trousers. As per tradition with the RF. Not sure Louis would pick out shorts, and a wool coat with a velvet collar to wear!

It's all just a spectacle to please the masses who want to ooh and ahh about them all dressed up

Rolls eyes. Sure. George never wore them when he was younger. It may suit Louis. Like I said I had ten year olds wandering around in them during that freezing week.

He May be an incredibly sweaty boy who finds it hard to regulate temperature. A lot of boys that age are. It’s actually a bit of prey you have to make sure they are extremely hydrated after they’ve been running around.

Thisbastardcomputer · 26/12/2022 09:16

For the life of me, I don't understand people queuing up to watch other people walking to church.

The royals don't ask for this, it's over enthusiastic royal followers. The amount of disabled fans who must have been frozen half to death. Some even get there the night before, mind blowing.

Eh? George did. I'm not picking an argument with you, I'm just gently saying what appears to be a tradition. It was with William and Harry too. William didn't wear long trousers till he was 8 or 9. Everywhere says it is tradition not choice.

I can't imagine Louis saying I want to wear shorts and that wool coat with the velvet collar Xmas Hmm
p.s. My NDN wears shorts all the year round by choice. Except when he's playing golf.

Loads of kids in shorts at our school last week. Weather is mild.

Andrew was there at a Royal Family public event.

He went to church on Christmas Day.
I have no time for him, but that's surely allowed, come on.

BadlydoneHelen · 26/12/2022 09:52

The clothes the children wear are their'work uniform' so that they are less recognisable in their usual mini Boden type stuff when off duty.

Then you would stand out. Especially the kids. People do not go to church dressed as if they are going to a wedding.

I don't know what kind of churches you go to, but round my area, people dress smartly for church. They weren't dressed like they went to a wedding, they were dressed smartly.

Do any children. Chances are they wore that stuff for an hour and then got back in their own clothes. Or like a lot of people dress up for Christmas. I meant George, who was six, didn’t wear them on his first appearance at Sandringham. A very mild winter too that winter pre covid.

That's my understanding of it too, I read that years ago.
Same reason why they are taught not to tell their own names if they are out playing with the nanny. It's for security.

God all the kids dressed like mini victorians. Lady Louise looks about 50.

Victorian children didn’t dress in lounge suits and knee length skirts 🙄

People often look quite smart going to church on Christmas Day. village churches in the home countries and smart london churches especially - but many others I’d imagine.

CoffeeBoy · 26/12/2022 19:01

George definitely wore shorts when you get, as did William and Harry. I believe once they hit 7yo they are “allowed” long trousers. Posh pre prep schools will have the young boys in shorts and long socks all year.

Serenster · 26/12/2022 19:05

She recycled an outfit from her mother’s wardrobe (quite sensible, as she’s a university student, it’s not like she’ll have so much call for a smart conservative church outfit and hat on a day to day basis). And her mother is in her late 50s. So…yes. I’m not sure why that’s worthy of scorn?

People who are regular churchgoers do not dress up unless very elderly. Middle-class people who treat going to church at Christmas as yet another Christmas experience, often do dress up. Look at the ushers and people doing the readings - the regulars. They will usually be dressed in smartish jumpers or similar. Not all dressed up smart as if it is a day out.

It is not security. It is to make them look different and special.

wordler · 26/12/2022 21:24

But apart from the hats which does take it into fancy territory they are all just wearing smart winter coats - that’s exactly what all the congregations wear I’ve ever been a part of (different income price point but basically the same styles).

And in the UK you keep that coat on for the whole service. As a kid I was always dressed in smart coats and smart dress shoes for Church exactly like Charlotte was wearing - and we were definitely lower middle class.

My Mum and Grandma did wear hats for church through to the 1980s as well.

I’ve lived in the States for the last ten years but I can’t believe people have changed that much for their Sunday best / Church clothes.

What if you are a middle class regular churchgoer? They must be in a right quandary as to what to wear.
