Diana's age at time of marriage.

I'm in my 20s so I really don't remember Diana. I did more reading on the subject and I can't believe the establishment thought it was ok to marry a 19 year old off to a man 13 years older than her who had no interest in her. No wonder she struggled this was the 1980s as well not the Victorian times! Could anyone around then tell me , why did her family back/support the marriage? Was there any concerns from the public ? I would be horrified at the thought of marrying my DD off at 19 to a much older man who wasn't really interest.

It was the 80s - that was the make up look of the day.

It was. Photos of me at the time reveal copious amounts of kohl and blue mascara. Not a look I’d opt for now.

upinaballoon · 21/12/2022 14:50

I am sitting here drinking tea from my Charles and Di mug. Yes, I know it should be a china cup and I have no class. They both look very young and happy and as Diana has her hair free from tiaras her fringe looks very good.

FloreatEtona · 21/12/2022 15:12

I've looked at the Chas & Di wedding footage and the dress was beautiful but in the taste of the time.

I remember wearing blue eyeliner in the 1980s, and we didn't put it on the top lid. This is back in the day when make up was a palette in a tin from Marks, or Rimmel or Miners from Woolies, and lipgloss was a sticky roll on, and we smelt of Limara, Impulse or 'Anay Anay'. Nearly everyone had a perm - the bigger the better.

SirChenjins · 21/12/2022 15:37

Oh yes, I’m remember it well @FloreatEtona

I also remember the invention of hair mousse and gel - these were massive advances in hair care as before them there was nothing much apart from Brylcream or setting lotion!

Blossomtoes · 21/12/2022 15:58

I didn’t have a perm, I had a mullet - the evidence has been destroyed!

ageingdisgracefully · 21/12/2022 16:24

I'd ditched my bubble cut in favour of a very short crop. I wore lots of makeup and non-matching earrings, together with colourful jeans or dungarees. . I was as far from Diana as I could get in terms of style; however I did wear a "sheep" jumper like hers (I like to think I was wearing it ironically, though..).

FloreatEtona · 21/12/2022 16:37

I refused to have a perm despite much nagging from my mother.
My hair is wavy, and I have never straightened it.
I didn't like mousse but would scrunch and spike my hair with gel until it was stiff.
I wore blue eyeliner and still do occasionally for fun, and that Panorama interview had me investing in dark eyeliner and opaque tights.

My mother still nags me about my hair, but she said the big 1980s perms were awful. A lot of people have suggested I straighten my hair, but I can't live my life fearing a few drops of rain.

I liked Princess Diana's looks but some of her early outfits weren't great. The flat shoes, midi skirts and big shoulders didn't bring out the best in her.

In the 1980s, fringe hairstyles were popular.

I had a bowl haircut (thanks for over-riding my request Mum, you made the hairdresser turn me into a mushroom . I wanted a pixie cut, you asked for a page boy so I got a very short bowl cut. I'll never forgive you)

Cookerhood · 21/12/2022 17:16

I quite like some of those styles 🤣

feellikeanalien · 21/12/2022 17:24

I loved my blue mascara. I wonder if anyone wears it now. Also a turned up shirt collar. The 80s were "interesting " in style terms.

MissMarpleRocks · 21/12/2022 17:32

And blue or green eyeshadow 😂

JiminyGlick · 21/12/2022 17:40

I wonder if she’d have ever grown her hair or had a more fashionable style?

FloreatEtona · 21/12/2022 17:43

@JiminyGlick , she was the fashion icon at the time. How she did her hair determined the fashion.

She was fashionable, especially as she got older. Long hair was very out of fashion.

It's only become near universal for younger women to have long hair since around 2000. I am the same age as she was and when I was growing up girls and women had hair of all lengths. It was extremely common for young women in the 1980s to have a perm or a short style that needed blowdrying.

Of course, as others have said, Diana became one of the main stylesetters in the world. If she'd shaved all her hair off we'd have seen a wave of other women doing the same in the following days.

<raises hand; turns red>

Despite the crimpers, the worst hairstyle I ever had was 1979/80 and also due to my mother.
I've got stick-straight, fine hair but desperately wanted a Farrah F-M.
This used to be achieved by curling my fringe with a curling tongs, then carefully easing it out and welding the resulting hair sausage into place with hairspray.
Bad enough...

However, my mother thought that a perm would help my "flick" hair turd stay in better, so she home-permed my fringe.
Just my fringe.
I looked as though an ambitious bird had nested just above my eyebrows Shock

And mothers are supposed to love you...Sad

LaMarschallin · 21/12/2022 18:00

And <whisper> I still sometimes wear blue eyeliner on my waterline.

Apparently, Diana couldn't be weaned off hers and used to sneak it on after her MUA had finished.

Blimey, that was dedication!

FloreatEtona · 21/12/2022 18:28

I'm surprised you and I weren't taken into (hair)care!

Worst thing about my haircut was that I had very long hair at the time, and it was my sibling who said that mother had 'had a word' with the hairdresser.
When my father saw my hair he said I should have had it cut like my cousin's - a shoulder length fringed bob, and that I was an idiot for not asking for the hair as it could have been sold for wigmaking. What was the point of telling me afterwards?
I got lots of 'Your hair was so nice before' comments from friends.
Why didn't my mother negotiate with me over the length?
Why the hell did my sibling tell me - I could have hated the hairdresser instead?

I got my pixie cut then spent about 3 years growing it out as I have the slowest growing hair in history.

My sibling is not nice.

my reference: Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby.
FloreatEtona · 21/12/2022 18:32

@LaMarschallin , at least my mother didn't give me a home perm.
I tried rags in my hair once. Never again.

Backcombed as well - it was like a wall of hair

upinaballoon · 21/12/2022 20:46

Do you remember Diana wearing what I would call pie-crust collars e.g. on blouse? That was a trend for a while.

SirChenjins · 21/12/2022 20:48

Yes I remember them - and had one! Anyone remember pedal pushers? I had a blue velvet pair <proud>

No, I didn't, but I remember being REALLY envious of my friend when she wore hers to a birthday party as I so wanted some. 😂
