So he’s called it ‘Spare’ and it’s being released on 23rd Jan.

I thought they wanted to distance themselves from the RF and live quieter lives in California away from scrutiny. So why do they keep popping up every time the dust settles. I thought he was a knob when he dressed as a Nazi and I haven't seen anything yet to change my mind. Tiresome chasing of relevancy and cash.

Middle age is the period beyond young adulthood but before old age. Young adulthood, the preceding period to middle age, is generally used to refer to adults in the 20s and 30s age range. Harry falls within this category so it doesn’t matter how much anyone wishes to age him he is not middle-aged but a young adult (irrespective of what age he passes on).

But I’ll have a good laugh telling my partner later that now we’ve left our 20s we’re both considered middle-aged (according to MN). That will give him cause to question my futile activities today.

sashagabadon · 27/10/2022 15:46

the paradox or maybe irony is that he is no longer a spare. That role now befalls Charlotte.
Wonder what she’ll make of being a spare as she ages. Hopefully she’ll realise the perks of sparehood. A lot of the benefits but fewer of the responsibilities and restrictions.
Spare is definitely the better job ( although you do have to get over yourself to appreciate it)

ShamedBySiri · 27/10/2022 15:50

Well no one has read the book yet @Coucous
He's absolutely entitled to discuss his experience and no doubt that will include issues relating to trauma surrounding the death of his mother and perhaps a discussion of therapy he has had to deal with it.
The problem is he still seems very angry with his family and regarding events surrounding the death of his mother. I personally think it would be good for him to finally lay all that to rest and move on and look to the future. Perhaps after this book he will. I really hope so.
His constant battles with the press appear to stem from his childhood and obviously blaming them for his mother's death. But he can never control the press and having endless lawsuits against various press outlets must all get very exhausting as well as expensive for instance.
He doesn't give the impression of being a man who has found peace with his life and his past yet and I think that's a shame for him.

I’m glad someone else has said that. Lots of dcs who have lost parents at that age want to be involved in the funeral.

They’re not all televised round the world with people lining the streets watching you walk behind the coffin though. He said it led to a chaotic time in his 20s, not just teens.

I didn’t start deal with my issues from childhood until mid to late 20s. Early 40s now and I’m just about ok with it all. There was a time I did lash out at family and I told people what had happened. It was very freeing to not keep the secrets and cover it up and finally talk about how o felt. It was definitely part of the healing process for me and it was a therapist that made me realise I didn’t have to not tell people anymore after all those years of feeling like I couldn’t. It helped me so to say it won’t help Harry may not be true. If he wants to talk and people want to listen/buy his book, why not. You don’t have to listen or buy the book if you don’t want.

Samcro · 27/10/2022 15:54

good title, got at least 2 threads going on mn lol
don't blame him for bringing out his own book, bowers and that courtier book , now him, why not.(unlike bowers at least he has met himself!)

LondonWolf · 27/10/2022 15:56

PoseyFlump · 27/10/2022 13:37

@LondonWolf do you not think being raised in the RF would be like living inside a cult? You make it sound so easy with your 'he should have done this' blah. How exactly do you escape the golden cage of the RF? When everything has always been done for you and you can't even walk down the street alone.

Why do you keep saying things I haven't said? I know you're probably relying on the people not bothering to go and check. I didn't say he "should have" done anything and I didn't say he should have left the RF as a young child like you claimed I did. Stop fibbing to back up your assertions. It's dishonest and tiresome.

@ShamedBySiri what an incredibly brave and interesting post. You raise such good points too.

Thank you.

Thank you @adriftabroad
I'm not even sure why I mentioned it or what point I was trying to make now!

Perhaps it is good to talk and let it all out.

I hope this book is a cathartis for Harry and he can then put his past behind him as much as possible and move on to a happier future. And that in doing so it doesn't cause too much upset to the other Royals or indeed other people such as old friends or ex army colleagues who might feature in the book and who might have preferred privacy.

LondonWolf · 27/10/2022 15:59

Sadly I believe there's two more to come after this one. A happy future with childhood trauma processed and adjusted to seems a long way off.

BlueRidge · 27/10/2022 16:03

I get that catharsis can be a good thing - for the person themselves, if not for the people around them, caught in the crossfire. But how can he possible think it's a good idea to tell the whole world? It's none of our business and we really don't need to know. A private 1:1 with a therapist would have the same benefit as shouting it out in public. Unless he's wanting revenge, which is more likely, in my opinion.
He may very well come to regret all this in future, but the words he utters now can't be unsaid.

I wanted everyone to know about things I’d dealt with. It wasn’t so much about revenge as just wanting people to know the truth. So many people said that things made sense after I told them, things about how I reacted in certain situations or why I felt so strongly about certain things. It just felt important for people to know. I felt like a huge weight lifted. I’ve never regretted anything I’ve said, I don’t believe I ever will.

People seem to think about the Harry situation as if he really cares about building bridges. I don’t believe he does. If he wants to tell the world, let him. If you don’t want to listen, don’t. It’s his life, he can do whatever he likes.

PoseyFlump · 27/10/2022 17:15

Why should he follow your life experience as though he doesn't have a life of his own.

👏🏻👏🏻

PoseyFlump · 27/10/2022 17:20

@LondonWolf you said:

"He didn't seem to mind remaining close to "them" and drawing on the incredible opportunities and resources being in the BRF gave him subsequently though did he? "

Which is why I asked you at what point do you think he should have escaped the cult of the RF??

MariEllie · 27/10/2022 17:21

No doubt page after page of how hard life is for a thick rich bloke worth millions. He needs to come to our food bank and swap places with one guy there!

lemmein · 27/10/2022 17:24

LaGioconda · 27/10/2022 12:45

Slightly mad to call himself a spare when he hasn't been the spare for over 9 years.

It's a memoir - by definition it's a historical personal account. The use of the word 'spare' is entirely appropriate as that has been his role for the majority of his life.

Lapland123 · 27/10/2022 17:25

I’ll be a spare, please, if I can be multi millionaire in a California mansion too!

ffs!

No you said I had said he should have escaped as a young child, which I didn't. I didn't say he should "escape" at all actually. I was alluding to the hypocrisy of constantly moaning about how awful it all was but still taking advantage of all the wonderful wealth, privilege and support that life and organisation gave to him without cease for decades. We are never going to agree on this spoiled, silly Prince and his wife and that's fine by me but misrepresenting what I post changing it completely is not good form.

FridayTheThirteeth · 27/10/2022 17:42

Spare - perhaps Sour or Sore or Sullen or Spoilt or Stupid

There is obviously a market for it and for the outpourings of the horrible, horrendous life he has had to 'suffer'

custardbear · 27/10/2022 17:43

I remember my dad saying the spare was born when Harry arrived in then planet - not nice but he's had a fantastic life and let's face it, all those behind the current monarch are the spares anyway.

I am just sick and appalled by both H&M creaming every single thing they can off the RF whether it's trying to sell gossip, lies and family issues to wringing out every drop of gold they can get from titles and dredging every bit of free money they can, shaming Charles for leaving him high and dry in America/Canada yet apparently he had funded them ... lies and more lies from those treacherous selfish greedy clowns

CrackpotOldFool · 27/10/2022 17:47

JubileeTrifle · 27/10/2022 11:48

It’s making out he wasn’t a wanted child. From what I’ve read this was the period of time that C&D were most happy and Diana definitely wanted another child, not just out of duty. It’s a horrible title.

Of course, what you have read is far more accurate than his own actual personal experience while growing up 🤦‍♀️

milveycrohn · 27/10/2022 17:49

If I were a member of the Royal Family, I would WANT to be the spare.
I would try and model myself on someone like P. Anne, although she has not always been the press' favourite.
I find it odd that he specifically blames the British press, when it was actually French and Italian Paparazzi photographers that were following Diana in Paris.
Also, there were times when Diana courted the Press, and would ring them to let them know where she would be. In fact I read that one of her last calls from Paris was to a journalist.
Obviously, the book has not yet been published, so we have no idea what is in it, or the tone it has been written. I mention this from previous interviews of Harry.
He is entitled to write his book, but traditionally the RF never 'explain or complain'. The problem is that Harry can criticise them obliquely, knowing they won't reply. So everything he says will be taken as completely truthful, when it may have a different interpretation.

At what point should he have left? Straight after his mother's funeral? Abused woman don't leave immediately. There's lots of brainwashing and control. It's so easy to say because he's wealthy that we shouldn't see it the same way. He was fucked up by his family. End of.

@LondonWolf this was my post. I never said you said. I have responded asking you questions that you don't bother to answer. You can easily stop quoting my posts just like you ignore my questions 🤷🏻‍♀️

LondonWolf · 27/10/2022 18:07

If I were a member of the Royal Family, I would WANT to be the spare.

Same! All that wonderful history and castles to live in and no real responsibility if you don't want it - I would want to be a working royal though as I am pretty nosy and would love travelling about the country seeing new buildings and talking to new people.

LondonWolf · 27/10/2022 18:10

LondonWolf this was my post. I never said you said. I have responded asking you questions that you don't bother to answer. You can easily stop quoting my posts just like you ignore my questions 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don't answer your questions because you precede them with untrue statements about what I supposedly said and then ask me to give too explanations based on them. I find it a bad faith way of holding a discussion because you're attempting to force me to justify statements I haven't actually made but would make me look foolish if I had. I'm going to ignore you and your bad faith questions from now on if you don't mind. Thanks Smile
