Liz Truss told Charles not to go to Cop27

The Sunday Times broke this story that King Charles had been due to go to Cop27 in Egypt and was planning to make a speech. Truss apparently in a personal meeting said he should not go. The Queen attended and made a speech at Cop26 so there is clear precedent there.

So do we think Truss should have told Charles not to go to Cop27?

Truss has managed to humiliate herself in the first weeks of the job, first with a policy that was obviously thick and unpopular, then by pathetic blaming of her staff, then with an embarrassing u-turn.

This has nothing to do with the monarchy being politically neutral and everything to do with Truss not wanting any famous Britian people to demonstrate what leadership should look like right now.

Oh f* off Liz Truss. She is just an awful embarassment and shouldn't be telling any king what to do. She probably doesn't want him there as it will expose that the Tories are doing jack about climate change.

I'd love to have seen LT attempt to tell the Queen not to go!

LuciaPopp · 03/10/2022 22:32

I find this a worrying confirmation of the fact that the government is planning to step back from all its environmental commitments and therefore doesn’t want the constitutional embarrassment of Charles making a speech that conflicts with that policy.

If they retract promises then my vote is well and truly going to Labour.

God bring back Boris!!

He shouldn't go no matter how passionate. Other countries do not send their Kings/ Queens.

antelopevalley · 04/10/2022 13:20

We sent our Queen last year. She did a speech.

Indeed but we were the hosts which makes it slightly different

Is he under her direction? 🤔

Yes. Essentially the RF are civil servants. Very highly paid and privileged civil servants, but civil servants none the less who do as they are told by the govt. If the govt wants to get on the right side of another govt, there'll be a State Visit with that govt's HoS being entertained by the monarch. It's how the queen ended up entertaining the likes of the Ceasescus and giving a knighthood to Mugabe.

That's because the conference was in the UK.
He should not go as he has to be apolitical and, while protecting the Earth is not political, how to achieve it is.

He definitely shouldn't go. Britain is not the only country with a monarchy - others aren't going why should he?

He needs to do what he’s told. He wasn’t elected. He knows that - HMQ did what she was told by the PM and he spent 50 years, thanks to her not abdicating, being able to express mild opinions. He now has to zip it. Which he knows.

This of course. The royal family members are just ordinary people who pretend to be superior to everyone else while everyone else plays the game and bows down to them.
They are effectively civil servants but instead of getting paid a monthly salary, they are told to live in castles and put jewellery on their heads.

I'm not a royalist but I can't agree with this. Royals are born into it and, yes, some decide to skulk away and wallow in their wealth, but others - like Diana, Charles and William have at least made an effort to use their fame, wealth and spotlight of (constant fucking) media attention to bring the worlds notice and fundraise for a few major things for good. Whether it be land mines, acting as an emergency air rescue crew, the illegal wildlife trade or climate change - they are using their clearly notoriety to shine a light on subjects that every prime minister in my lifetime has ignored or shied away from. I fancy our chances a million times more with tackling climate change with Charles at the helm that bloody useless, gormless Liz Truss.
Go on Charles!

Cause they don't give a flying shit about climate change?
