The royal family

Will the royals go to Sandringham for Christmas this year?

Just watching Channel 5's 2017 Sandringham: The Queen at Christmas (don't judge me I am at home with Covid!)
I love local to Sandringham and didn't realise how much input the Queen had into the Christmas traditions (choosing stocking items etc) and then staying until her ascension day in February. Just made me wonder if now the Royal Family have lost their matriarch will it be similar to so many other families Christmas once the matriarch has passed and will they now do their own thing at Christmas? I imagine Kate might like a day with her own parents or Sophie with hers or those with younger children might want to stay in their own homes

No they’ll do whatever Charles wants because 1. He’s the king and therefore in charge in an old fashioned way that doesn’t apply to normal families and 2. They love him and want to be kind to him and know he is going to find this Christmas difficult.

It's a bit different though because the Queen was their mother and grandmother.
Charles is uncle or sibling to some, and more distantly related to others on the periphery.
I would guess the dynamic may well change, but would expect William and Kate to spend some time with him.

I really doubt that many will care much anymore. Which is possibly exactly what they want.

@greenhousegal that's what I thought I have grown up with them literally on my doorstep every Christmas and while I completely understand them all coming together to see Mummy/Grannie/Gan Gan it's not quite the same to get together just the aunties/uncles/cousins. I would think Camilla will want to see her own children. Will be very interesting to see what happens and if it stays 'the same' this year before changing next. Sandringham have masses of visitors on Christmas Day and the days around it so would think the estate will have already planned for that.

I think they'll have an open invite family get together either at Sandringham or maybe Highgrove to be closer to Camillas family.

I imagine him and his siblings and their families will still go.

You'll see a change when William is king. Then it might be just him and maybe Harry's family.

William definitely doesn’t seem as keen as Charles on the ‘having masses of enormous houses’ thing.

I think they’ll have a traditional Christmas either at Sandringham or return to Windsor.

it’s part of the brand.

Sophie with hers

Since her mother died Sophie’s father has been included in RF Christmases.

Because they’re famously close these days.

I must admit I also wondered.
Will they keep it traditional this year?
Or be more relaxed because there are too many memories?
Windsor?
Everywhere will have the queen's décor.

And Camilla's family? Will they also attend?

I think vanillas family are far too sensible to get involved!

Windsor?

They used to have Christmas there until 1988

I think Camillas family might be there too. It wouldn't be good for their marriage for it all to be his side.

I have to say this sentence on Sandringhams website has amused me.

I hardly think the success or failure of their marriage is likely to be dependent on who they spend Christmas Day with. 🙄

One of the things that worked well for them at Sandringham is the walk into church and greeting people. Charles will need to be seen going to church as head of the church and I'm guessing they'll look to maximise any opportunity to meet friendly public. So when they are deciding if they pick another palace it needs to offer the same advantages.

Sorry - what I meant was it's not just about family and who wants to see who, it's a whole decision process based on what's good for the RF and their image.

I think it's true that the family needs to be seen to attend church together.

Why did they change it?

it needed rewired, then had the fire.

Presumably they enjoyed it more as they’ve stayed since and use Windsor at Easter.

I do feel sorry for all the other families that are not included. That is why Kate and William have not always gone.

It can't be nice for Camilla never to see her DGC or DC on Christmas day. Small things that make a difference.

Thanks for the explanation on switch to Sandringham for Christmas.
