Queuing to see the coffin

I've seen reports that people can expect to queue for 30+ hours.

A friend was telling me she queued for more than 5 hours to see the Queen Mother's coffin.

Why? I understand the desire to pay respects. If I was I the area and it was a mattr to popping in, I might even do it myself, but incant think of anything I want to do enough to queue 30 hours. For that to.happen though, there must be 1000s who do want to do it. Why, what's the significance to individuals that makes it worthwhile?

I don't know. I'm sure people do all kinds of things that don't appeal to others. It's not worth the headspace wondering why. I could ask 'Why do people wonder why other people do things' but I won't because I don't care.

You're never interested in what makes other people tick, never interested in anyone else's thoughts or views? . I'm regularly fascinated.

I can understand why people might want to - I wouldn't, but we are all different. I do wonder how enough people to form 30-hour queues are free to stand in them; it isn't like this is a long-planned event where people could have booked time off work and so on.

I can see no reason other than to be able to tell people that they saw it.
People can give all the reasons they like but that’s basically what it comes down to.

I don't understand this. Where do they go to the toilet? How do they sleep and eat? Don't they have anything to do? Jobs, families etc?

I did read somewhere that they'll be able to leave the queue briefly to use the loo

I find it really bizarre that people would queue for hours to see a coffin! Maybe they are the same types that queue at 5am on boxing day for the next sales or camp outside the apple shop when the latest iphone is released?

There's probably be an hours long queue for the portaloos as well.

It’s raining and due to rain all day tomorrow

FloorCushion · 13/09/2022 19:17

For many (?most) I assume it’s because they have a sincere desire to pay their respects. For others I suppose it will be to create a memory, an ‘I was there’ moment.
We are British so our love of a good queue could be a selling point?
I wish the NHS could seize the day and give everyone a covid and flu jab on their way out.

HermioneWeasley · 13/09/2022 20:47

Christ knows. That’s comparable to the queues at the Ukrainian border when the Russians invaded and people were fleeing for THEIR LIVES.

Violashift · 13/09/2022 20:51

In Edinburgh they were just walking passed the coffin. Surely they could nod, say a pray or tip their hats. Just seems like no respect is happening just gawping.

Each to their own I guess. It's not for me.

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 13/09/2022 20:55

I don't get it at all. 30+ hours in a queue, slowly shuffling forward for a glimpse at a wooden box draped in a flag? It's bonkers.

DontKeepTheFaith · 13/09/2022 20:59

I’m intrigued by people who do want and plan to go knowing the queues are expected to be horrifically long. Like hours and hours long, it’s very peculiar.

I cannot stand for more than a few minutes without getting restless and feeling the need to find something to lean against so I simply don’t think I could physically do it.

For some people it will feel important to try and pay their respects, others will just feel they want to be part of history. Most people wouldn’t consider it for a second🤷‍♀️
