Plant a Tree for The Jubilee

Don't you think this would have been a better idea than keeping beacons burning all over the place? Aren't we meant to be more environmentally aware these days? The beacons will eventually die out and we'll all move on, nothing but charred grass to show for it, but if communities planted saplings instead the tree would live on and be something nice and positive that was a result of the Queen's long reign. I dunno, just thought it was a better plan, plus it rhymes. 😁

Bloody good idea. I thought it was a thing when I saw your thread title. Bit disappointed to find out it’s not.

JemimaPuddlegoose · 30/05/2022 17:59

That would be such a lovely idea!

Oh! Hahahaha, there was me thinking I was being so original! It's a shame it's not really being undertaken on a widespread basis then (or is it? Does anyone know if their community is taking part?)

people are planting trees for the jubilee. A million across the commonwealth I think. Our council planted a few in local parks

alphasox · 30/05/2022 18:16

It is a thing! We planted trees at our kids school - one for every student.

chrisrobin · 30/05/2022 18:19

My church has planted 15 trees as part of the Queens Green Canopy (we don't have a huge amount of outside space), quite a few of the churches in our area have taken part too. We had to apply for them last year and they were delivered in November so it may be that any local publicity around it happened a while ago.

Wrong time of year for tree planting though sadly. A tree planted in summer (ie when its in leaf) will need several buckets of water every day if it isn't to die. So anyone participating in this needs to establish a strict rota of waterers to go on till at least autumn half term IMO

Definitely a thing. Two new trees were planted at my work with commemorative plaques on Friday.

Oh so pleased to hear it is a thing.

The planting scheme ran from last October to this, March, and starts again this October.

Ah that's good NewBoots. A relative of mine was muttering that her village was foing to plant one this weekend and he was sure it would die - they must have misread the memo!

I planted a tree for 73 and planted some more for 74. It was the slogan then. Sometimes I planted in the wrong places. I planted an oak tree earlier this year, praying it will still be standing when I am long gone, but I wouldn't be surprised if THEY come and hack it down one day and build all over it.
