Why is the DoC taking part in the state opening of Parliament? Was the PoW involved when the Queen opened Parliament?

Do you think there is a plan for them to share more of the top job once the PoW ascends to the throne? Particularly given he's not young himself?

more likely when Charles is king, at some point he may be sick and William will have to do the state opening so it could be letting William see what it’s like. Definitely not a share king.
I’m now going to sit quietly and wait for someone to say that Charles should not king because of Diana - and when they do I’ll be sitting here assuming their lives are perfect, whilst reminding myself both were at fault

sashagabadon · 10/05/2022 11:25

Training opportunity / succession planning I would imagine so he knows roughly what’s involved

ChicCroissant · 10/05/2022 11:29

They are both there in their official capacity as Counsellors of State, the Queen has issued a Letters Patent. The Counsellors of State take over if the Queen is incapacitated. The PoW has attended the State Opening of Parliament with Camilla before.

It's likely to cause another discussion about the Counsellors of State, there are only four of them and two aren't doing Royal duties any more!

SeemsSoUnfair · 10/05/2022 11:32

Yeah at 73 he will be wanting to go PT.

He'll be king on a Tue-Wed and Wills will do Thur-Sun.
Will need a handover on a Wednesday maybe to handover the crown and big stick thing (scepter?).
They'll both need to pro rata their salaries and holiday allowance.
Maybe take it year about to get Christmas off.

KindergartenKop · 10/05/2022 11:32

Maybe they could apply to the Queen for a jobshare? 😂

Don't worry, I'm not serious. There's no point having ridiculous traditions and a hereditary monarchy if you don't actually follow the rules.

I wonder if it was because two royals were always planned.
i think camilla being there is the odd bit given Williams attendance

  • im not anti camilla by the way.

i do think William will be a lot more visibly active than Charles was during his mothers reign. Partly because of age and a change in the monarchy, also they aren’t stupid they know it will be a bumpy time for the monarchy once she goes.

KindergartenKop · 10/05/2022 11:33

@SeemsSoUnfair what if Wills has to watch one of his kids in a football match on a Saturday?

They send Ann

KindergartenKop · 10/05/2022 11:34

@EvilPea that's a really good point. They clearly do have some PR people involved.

You have to have two councillors of state to stand in. Obviously they're not going to ask Harry or Andrew, so it's Charles and William.

BlueSpottedGiraffe · 10/05/2022 11:35

Two councillors of state need to attend on the queens behalf, seeing as there are only 4 and the other two are Harry and Andrew, Charles and William have to do it together.

EdithWeston · 10/05/2022 11:36

Utterly normal to take the next on line along. If you look at pix from back when both the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh attended, you can see Charles and Camilla there as well.

So business as usual, to some extend. Though it does suggest the Queen is currently very frail, as this (along with the Cenotaph, Trooping the Colour and a few big race meetings) are the things she really would make every effort to attend.

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 10/05/2022 11:37

It's a CPD opportunity for Wills. After its finished, he will be emailed a post-course questionnaire to fill in.

Triffid1 · 10/05/2022 11:38

Isn't it to do with the fact that councillors of state have to be present? And Camilla isn't one until she's actually the wife of the monarch? It's spouse of monarch and next four direct heirs only (over 21)? So currently it's Charles, William, Harry and Andrew. Which is something of a shitshow as I believe if the councillors of state are replacing the queen in her official capacity, there have to be two of them. Which means currently it can only be William and Charles. hahahahaha.

Aposterhasnoname · 10/05/2022 11:38

They are there in their capacity as councillors of state. The protocol says that there must be two
or more of the four/five councillors present when carrying out any of the monarchs duties. The other two COS are very much out of action, so expect to see Charles and Wills doing a lot more of this stuff together into Charles becomes king. Unless there’s a regency of course.

AdaColeman · 10/05/2022 11:46

Camilla is there in her role as Queen in Waiting, her job today will be to spot if the retiring rooms need a lick of paint or some new cushions to add a pop of colour. She will also be checking out the catering facilities, for instance do they need a new kettle or some cheery biscuit tins by Orla or Cath.
She will be looking at various uniforms too, she’s probably already got some changes in mind for Black Rod! Wink Wink

EdithWeston · 10/05/2022 11:48

Camilla has been attending since her marriage - it's hardly a new gig for her.

Prince Charles has been attending for decades.

SomePeopleAreJustIdiots · 10/05/2022 12:25

That explains the 2 helicopters arriving last night!

KindergartenKop · 10/05/2022 12:31

Thanks, I've actually learned something from this! Why is Anne not a councillor of state? She's my favourite.

OP posts:
tribpot · 10/05/2022 12:35

Yes, I would imagine Anne is also wondering what it will take to kick Andrew out of his Councillor of State role so that someone slightly more qualified and sensible (i.e. her) can do it.

MumThatsNotFair · 10/05/2022 12:36

Shadowing? The aristocratic version of an internship?

Oh I see @Triffid1 did explain that the four CoS are the spouse of the monarch and the direct heirs, hence why Andrew hasn't had his marching orders. Grand old Duke of York pun intended.

I believe that because of the antiquated succession thing ( now changed thank goodness) which still applies to older members of the RF the next counsellors of state to be offered the gig would be Beatrice and Eugenie. Seems a bit daft, I can’t really see what they would have to offer, nice but dim Edward and Anne would be better choices.

Me too. I hope they remember to send him the one that has the smiley to sad face options for him to tick.
