The Queen's Speech 2021

Watching her speech today, I thought the Queen was very dignified and showed her strength of character, in the way she spoke about Prince Philip. It must be very hard for her to face public life without her life partner by her side, when they had been together for so many years. I know the speech was prerecorded, but I wonder how many takes it took to do - I wonder if she had any wobbles, or whether she managed to control her emotions all the time and keep a stiff upper lip? Considering it's only been months since Prince Philip died, I think she did well to hold it together.

I noticed that there was no mention of H and M, which seemed fair enough, considering that they chose to opt out of royal duties and moved to another continent. I felt that the omission was significant - a clear sign that the RF continue to thrive without H and M's input.

I ❤ Queenie. We are so lucky to have her.

Seemslikeagoodidea · 26/12/2021 02:04

@madisonbridges I feel the same way, although I laughed at the term "Queenie" it makes her sound like a beloved dog! Grin

I think it's because I want to give her a hug - which I expect she'd hate. Hey, I did have a dog a bit like that once! Whaddayaknow! 😉

There's a thread over in Telly Addicts that people might be interested in

There are a good many programmes nowadays where it seems obligatory for people to well up or break down in front of camera, and I have begun to feel that it's all a bit predictable and boring and somehow offensive, because it feels as if the makers of the programmes are enjoying it, but we'll not get any of that from her.
Have you ever read anything in public, Seemslikeagoodidea? I think a few private practices are always useful in cases like that. When she was talking about PP, D of E, did she say "..the first time I set eyes on him.."? It was something like that. I thought that bit was nice.
(Yes, I was told at school that 'nice' is an over-used word, but shucks.)

Seemslikeagoodidea · 26/12/2021 19:13

@WinnieTheW0rm Oh, I didn't see that thread... I searched the RF and news sections, saw nothing there so began this one. Ah well.

@upinaballoon No, I've never done any public speaking, that would terrify me. The Queen has had a lifetime of doing it, so is very professional about it, but if I was in her position I would not be able to speak about PP without feeling tearful (although I am 100% wimp when it comes to such things... I still get tearful talking about my mother, who died several years back).

No mention of Anne, Edward and Sophie either, hadn't over thought it but since you pointed it out obviously there's a massive cull happening.

SoupDragon · 27/12/2021 09:37

No mention of Anne, Edward and Sophie either

They were all in the footage accompanying the speech.

ForagingForMullberries · 28/12/2021 02:56

I think the omission of Harry and Meghan was undignified and spiteful, the speech was petty and self indulgent and reinforces my view that the Queen is not a nice person and we should become a Republic. Because no matter whether Harry is a working Royal or not, he is still the Queen's flesh and blood as it were. He is her family, he is her grandson and nothing can ever change that, no matter where he lives.

SallyLockheart · 28/12/2021 05:08

She didn’t mention Peter Philips, Zara and Mike Tindall, Beatrice and Eugenie and husbands nor Louise and James. The focus was on the core working royals as it should be

Harry has been a total shit to his whole family, I wouldn't mention him either as I'd be too hurt, but also embarrassed, he's shameful!
custardbear · 28/12/2021 05:30

... not to mention using his status, as well as Meghan, to grab money and try to piggyback onto current affairs to lift their status (albeit the majority think they're pricks) ... again to self publicise

Kinneddar · 28/12/2021 05:31

Why would she mention them? She never mentioned any of her other grandchildren what makes them worthy of a mention?

Agree - the four DGGC all got an equal mentions, and none of them had their parents mentioned. Aside from that, the entire family focus was on her late husband

Prince Philip and first two in the line of succession and their wives were the only to be mentioned by name, and those doing official appointments on behalf the Queen (PoW and DoC, the Cambridges plus the Princess Royal and Wessexes) were in the pictures. That was the focus on the institution.

Seemslikeagoodidea · 28/12/2021 20:08

@custardbear I'm with you on the subject of H and M, I think they have caused stress and upset to the Queen and the rest of the RF. It's fine that they opted out, but the Oprah interview was very contrived and M came across as playing the victim to stir up trouble. Never forget she is an actress.

The Queen is the opposite - she tries to keep the lid on her emotions, rather than look for sympathy, despite being bereft of her beloved husband. I think she is amazing and she has my respect.

I didn't realise this was a thread to knock H&M?

What have they got to do with the Queen's speech?

Lockupyourbiscuits · 28/12/2021 20:54

She looked very thin - her poor little shoulders
Nothing of her 🙁

Absolute rubbish. As already mentioned, she didn’t mention quite a few other members of her family either. Personally I would suggest you are not a nice person for harshly judging a very recently bereaved old lady who was clearly devoted to her husband.
OverByYer · 28/12/2021 21:00

Yes I thought she looked quite frail as well.

upinaballoon · 29/12/2021 16:09

Going back to your original post, Seemslike, I think she would have practised it in private, at home, several times, and if she wept it would have been at the first read-through, and by the fifth she would have been able to do it without tears. Of course, I don't KNOW. I agree that she is professional about it. (She's not as glamorous as Marilyn M but the cameraman would have known it wouldn't take 3 days to shoot 5 minutes of film.)

Seemslikeagoodidea · 29/12/2021 17:54

@upinaballoon I agree, she would have rehearsed it a few times, I'm sure. As for glamorous, I think she was very glamorous in her youth, and Prince Phillip was very handsome. They were a very striking pair in their 20s and 30s, but old age has taken its toll on the Queen now, which happens to everyone who reaches their 90s.

I'd have been amazed, and very surprised, if she had mentioned them. Lili was included in the year's great-grandchildren count, I think?
Candyflossie · 05/01/2022 19:29

She mentioned about being blessed with new additions to the royal family this year, which would include Lilybet.

roses2 · 05/01/2022 19:40

The queen didn't even live with Philip pre covid, he was shacked up with his mistress Penny.
