..after the Queen dies, and a suitable period of mourning has been observed, Charles and William issued a statement. " we have decided the monarchy is out-dated in the 21st century, and so are retiring and intend to become private citizens. Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace belong to the nation, as does the royal art collection; the jewellery given to our grandmothers and great-grandmothers belongs to the family, so we will be taking that"
Etc, etc. what would you reaction be?

William can abdicate on behalf of himself & his children

William cannot abdicate or renounce on behalf of his children. Their rights are independent of William's.

Tealightsandd · 25/04/2021 14:30

Haven't read the thread, but my immediate reaction would be to pray Tony Blair has permanently emigrated by then. Oh how he longed to be president. Thank goodness we had the monarchy!

SenecaFallsRedux · 25/04/2021 14:35

Edward VIII did that but, crucially, no DC had been born at the time he said that, and it was making it clear that if any were born of his impending marriage, they would not join the line of succession.

True, but it was actually the Abdication Act of 1936 that blocked any children of Edward VIII from the succession. An Act of Parliament would be necessary to remove William's children from the succession; William can't do that on his own.

CovidCorvid · 25/04/2021 14:37

If they said that yhrn George would be king.

Alsohuman · 25/04/2021 14:46

@Jumpalicious

Well they stole the kohinoor diamond for a start, so not even their Crown Jewels should be kept in the family.
The Crown Jewels belong to the State. The Koh-i-Noor wasn’t stolen, it was ceded as part of the Treaty of Lahore.
Jellybabiesforbreakfast · 25/04/2021 14:49

William and Harry could abdicate but what about George, Charlotte, Louis and Archie? I'm not sure that as minors they could consent to giving up their rights.

stackthecats · 25/04/2021 14:52

@BrilliantBetty

I don't see how they can just end the monarchy. It would be up to the people, wouldn't it?

Maybe there'd be some sort of vote?

We managed to cut a Charles's head off once before... Grin
Tana433 · 25/04/2021 14:53

I would wake up, stretch, have my cornflakes and start my day!

allaboutthecrisps · 25/04/2021 14:56

I don't think Harry has the right to speak about other people's experiences. He has not come across as reflective at all and not shown an ability to connect with other's experiences so I think he has no way, really, of knowing whether his brother and dad feel trapped. Despite the narrow rhetoric, neither of them 'has' to be king.

Candycane57 · 25/04/2021 15:00

I'd jump for joy and pop open a bottle of champagne. Then I'd eagerly await their announcement of where their stolen land and loot will be redistributed to. Hopefully they turn Buckingham Palace into a sex dungeon.

I’d be interested to see how much Harry continues to hate the Royal Family and all it stands for given that, as things stand, he could be King Regent until George is of age.

Roussette · 25/04/2021 15:15

Of course he doesn't hate the Royal Family, just because he doesn't want to be a working Royal. Hmm

katy1213 · 25/04/2021 15:19

Leaving aside the fact that they probably can't abdicate on George's behalf, Andrew would be gagging for his big chance. And I rather imagine Queen Meghan would be making sure damn sure Harry had a change of mind if he were guaranteed the top job.
Not a hope of it happening. Charles has spent a lifetime waiting for his dear mama to die.

YellowGlasses · 25/04/2021 15:23

@Roussette

Of course he doesn't hate the Royal Family, just because he doesn't want to be a working Royal. Hmm
But it’s also fair to say he was perfectly happy to remain a working Royal if he could do it part time for the half in/half out approach he wanted and tried to have. It was only after that was refused by the Queen, that being a working member was completely unbearable for him.

I don’t think anyone does the kind of Oprah interview that he willing took part in if that person loves or is indifferent towards those it was aimed at. And, hating the Royal Family (which is a company/business) is not the same as hating your family.

Roussette · 25/04/2021 15:27

Well.... he's not doing half in half out is he? So that's OK.

If he hated them 'the business' and all it stands for, he'd cut contact wouldn't he? He hasn't.
He quite rightly chose to defend and be with his family.

CloudPop · 25/04/2021 15:29

Let's have a referendum! We're good at those.

murbblurb · 25/04/2021 15:37

I think that the queen's strong sense of duty is because she was dumped in the shit (yes, privileged shit but who would really want such a life?) And wouldn't want to do it to anyone else. Otherwise she would probably have abdicated long since.

All Edward viii did wrong was to fall in love with a divorcee, although as they were both unable to have kids Elizabeth would have ended up queen anyway - but not until 1972. Without the stress of becoming king, her father may even have lived longer than his brother.

Then she would not have had the same obligation and might have let Charles take over earlier. He is already 72 and will be by far the oldest to accede. Decision needs to be made as to whether it goes to William or we do decide to call it a day.

That's a bit ageist, isn't it? I'm older than Charles and still working. Quite a few of us oldies can still manage to do our jobs.

murbblurb · 25/04/2021 17:12

Fair enough and not meant that way. Ok his mum is still doing it and it's not like he has to run a home in parallel, but he's served too long an apprenticeship. And perhaps he'd like to retire?

oldshoeuk · 25/04/2021 17:17

Andrew would be king, at last a king who doesn't sweat! Even in the company of young girls.

Mrsorganmorgan · 25/04/2021 19:35

Careful what you wish for

Biden is older and he's managing to be a President.
Redglitter · 25/04/2021 20:18

Wtf makes Harry think Charles & William want to 'escape' Hes just a absolute idiot. I wish he'd belt up & the press would stop encouraging him

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/04/2021 23:18

Wtf makes Harry think Charles & William want to 'escape'

Well, I can't comment on William, but his father's on record as whining that “Nobody knows what utter hell it is to be the Prince of Wales” so who knows?

Actually some of us wish he would clear off, except that he'd probably whine about whatever he cleared off to ... because whining seems to be what he does

Alsohuman · 26/04/2021 14:29

Just like his son, the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.
