The royal family

Prince William had Covid

...around the same time as his father.

Was apparently quite ill with it and it was kept quiet so as not to alarm the public

That would have had them panicking. Heir and his heir ill at the same time is their worst nightmare!

If that had happened and George had ended up being next in line then the Regent options (Harry first, then If he declined Andrew, as the next in line over 21) would have been a disaster

No wonder the Queen was shut away so tightly!!

Source?

Youngatheart00 · 02/11/2020 00:49

On the bbc

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-54774942

I don’t know why the link didn’t post

It’s all over the media and was on the 10 o’clock news

Eggypegg Its on all the news sites

seayork2020 · 02/11/2020 00:53

Well it not really a surprise so not sure why it is all over the news (not saying it is not true)

alexdgr8 · 02/11/2020 00:54

remember that service at westminster abbey, was it the one when megxit made their last appearance.
some of them were still shaking hands and some not.
it was before the original lockdown, obviously.

lyralalala · 02/11/2020 00:55

Two of the three most senior members of the royal family being ill at the same time with Covid is going to be news

As is a senior royal keeping it quiet

Ah, but the BBCs source is the Sun.

I hadn't seen any of the news pages tonight, which is why I asked. But I'm generally dismissive of anything to do with The Sun. Wonder what their agenda is now.

The commonwealth service?

You definitely have to question having all senior royals and most of government together in the same place in March when we knew it was spreading and growing

To be honest, with all the stockpiling that was happening around that time, perhaps keeping it quiet was wise. The public love a reason to get hysterical.
turnitonagain · 02/11/2020 01:00

Funny there’s a thread now about how opaque the Chinese government is. Yet we see in our own country how the truth about COVID was covered up for someone powerful. I don’t buy that it was to protect the British public at all. William didn’t want people to know for his own reasons.

lyralalala · 02/11/2020 01:02

I think it would have been kept quiet because lots of the the public were raging with Harry at that moment

Discussions about a regency headed by him or Andrew would have caused even staunch royalists to question the point of them

Reading Chris Ship's Tweets i think the issue is journalists were pissed they weren't told rather than their being a constitutional crisis. Prince Charles had relatively mild symptoms in his illness.
Quite ill means what exactly he apparently was ill on the 17th but sat next to his (Covid negative) wife on the 17th delivering a socially distanced engagement

alexdgr8 · 02/11/2020 01:14

i don't think that's how it works necessarily now.
if need be, Kate would be assisting young georgy-porgey.
by the way, i have a fantasy that sis charlotte is more suited to the role; the way she smiled to the people and gave a regal wave, so self-possessed, en route to see newborn Louis.
what age was she then. so composed, a prodigy.
so in my imagined world, young georgy finds it all rather boring and cramps his style, looks across at charlotte, and says, hey how about we swap. and she graciously steps in to take up the orb and sceptre. to become another great queen.

The Regent is an automatic thing under the current Regency act. Unless there is a Regency act put into place the Regent is the next in line over the age of 21

If both Charles and William died then Kate would retain custody of the children (in years gone by that would have gone to the Regent as well), but she wouldn't be Regent.

It would be Harry, then Andrew and then Beatrice.

Well considering that William was here in Ireland in March, shaking hands with all and sundry and joking about Covid, I’m not surprised if the idiot got it. Proves that he is thick as mince. I commented on the absurdity of the situation at the time as we’d already stopped exchanging the sign of peace at religious services and were constantly being reminded not to attend if feeling ill in any way. And then that plonker comes over here and goes around shaking hands...

BathTubGin · 02/11/2020 01:27

Charles moved to his holiday home In Scotland- against the national guidance- one he had covid.
Sounds like William did as well- no wonder he wasn't keen to share

One rule for some it seems

JamieLeeCurtains · 02/11/2020 01:28

And therein endeth the monarchy.

BathTubGin · 02/11/2020 01:29

Charles had covid symptoms and tested positive the day after the arrived (with symptoms) in Scotland.

At the very least, I hope you hung up bunting and thanked his highness for choosing to spread royal germs in Scotland! Wink

This. In March he was joking about how he was spreading Coronavirus around with all of his travelling. Given that I'm not surprised he covered up he tested positive in April!
CatAndHisKit · 02/11/2020 02:20

William is young and healthy - why would anyone jump to conclusion that he'd actually die of covid?? He rightly thought it wasn't worth announcing unless it gets seriously (unlikely event).

HIs father and Trump (as an example) who are around 70 recovered quickly even at their age. They all have medical teams watching over them too so no delays in treatment.

Pixxie7 · 02/11/2020 02:29

Actually it would have been princess anne if Harry had declined.
