The mirror is reporting Prince Harry does not want to give up being the figurehead of the marines despite giving up on the royals.

I suppose....do they want him?

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 02/06/2020 22:05

Harry forgets that we serve(d) his grandmother.

And I believe he chose to go and pimp his missus out for cartoon bit parts on a night he should have been at a forces do.

He shouldn’t get to pick and choose. He chose to leave.

So off you pop princess. Wee George would be more welcome.

Couldn’t bring myself to click on a mirror link so googled.
Headlines vary greatly depending on the price of the newspaper.

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/06/2020 22:38

I agree he doesn’t get to pick and choose. I would have thought everyone, who served and their families must be feeling pretty insulted right now.

I haven’t google any other articles. This popped up in my newsfeed. I must confess to reading the tabloid feeds as well as those from broadsheets.

If they want it and he does then I don’t see the issue.

Inspiralcarpetry · 02/06/2020 23:12

A lovely retired Armed Forces friend of mine is extremely scathing about Harry ever since he chose the Disney premiere evening. He feels that generally Harry was accepted and liked when in the forces, but that he has really turned his back on the Forces, his country and his Queen.
He once actually met Andrew briefly by the way and said he was horrible! Really rude and dismissive. Said he had a terrible reputation and was really disliked as a pompous prat. Seems not much changes there then!Grin

7Worfs · 06/06/2020 18:14

Harry keeping the position while in Hollywood and getting dragged into political causes by his wife? Highly inappropriate.

The position should go to the most badass of the current working royals, Princess Anne.
Then it can go to Charlotte or Louis when they grow up.

Inspiralcarpetry · 07/06/2020 10:58

Agree, Anne would be ideal with her dedication, work ethic and traditional approach to royals not involving themselves in politics.

candilemon · 07/06/2020 13:57

I think he’s burnt his boats.

MissEliza · 07/06/2020 17:13

He just can't pick and choose. I also think he's lost a lot of people's respect anyway.

Not to mention turning up to the Royal Albert Hall for the Mountbatten Festival of Music for the Royal Marines and behaving as if they were on a date night.

iVampire · 08/06/2020 10:25

There aren’t many (ceremonial) Colonels/Commanders in Chief (is that the right term, depending on unit?) who are not senior, working Royals

There’s the King of Norway and of Nepal, and the Duke of Wellington. Any others?

I don’t think a non-resident non-working Royal is a terribly good choice for this role.

There will have to be a reorganisation to deal with the departure of Prince Andrew, but perhaps that’ll have to wait until after the Sussex review (though I bet planning is already underway, with various options depending on his plans mature)

I had never heard of the military careers of successive Nils Olav

From lance corporal to Colonel in Chief and a knighthood in three generations!

What a fantastic chain of penguins

iVampire · 08/06/2020 13:15

I think I’d heard of a penguin connexion but has no idea he’d risen to be c-in-c!

I shall now ponder which creatures might best take over other formations. A guinea pig for the Squidgies?

My grandad was a guinea pig patient. They did amazing work on wounded and burnt crew. Getting back to PH. Was he ever in The Marines.

MissEliza · 08/06/2020 17:45

@HappyHammy I'd never heard of the Guinea pig club. More people should know about it.

HappyHammy · 08/06/2020 18:27

Yes. They did amazing groundbreaking work. Smile

iVampire · 08/06/2020 18:38

I had heard of the Guinea Pigs, but that wasn’t what I was thinking of when I posted!

An amazing group, and right in the thick of such a contribution to medical advancement
