Somewhere to discuss the Sparkly headwear if the royals to avoid taking the other thread off topic too much!

There Rundell would be my tiara of choice

I will be settling down with a drink later to educate myself on tiara hierarchy and enjoy the bling. Fantastic thread

Love Sophie's aquamarine whopper.

WhenPushComesToShove · 23/02/2020 09:42

OMG... Tiarapedia! I think I've just died and gone to heaven 💕

lidoshuffle · 23/02/2020 11:12

I went to a fab V&A exhibition just on tiaras, which I thought was about 8 years ago, but was actually18! Shock. There was Di's Spencer tiara and lots of other magnificent jewels but also arty and theatrical pieces.

There was a book on it (out of print now) to get the jewellery juices flowing:

Oh i have been signing ovber the tiaras. The steel cut missing tiara was interesting.

I have to say though- although the craftsmanship of the steel cut tiara is impressive, if i had a tiara I would want to the full blingy mc bling

@7Worfs

Thanks for that link. I live fairly close to NT Polesden Lacey and it's well worth a visit. The gardens are beautiful especially the rose garden and the herbaceous border.

Just popping this here!

Mominatrix · 23/02/2020 13:15

Interesting that most of the tiaras come from Queen Mary - she certainly had a love of bling. Are there any significant pieces prior to Victoria which are used (besides the Crown items)?

Waterandlemonjuice · 23/02/2020 16:11

Omg Eugenie’s wedding tiara was 93 carats!!

I have disappeared down a tiara rabbit hole!

Rumboogie · 23/02/2020 16:11

IMO the Spencer tiara knocks them all into a cocked hat! Closely followed by the York tiara.

lyralalala · 23/02/2020 16:24

@Mominatrix A lot of Victoria's jewels vanished into the ether because they were split up amongst so many children

One that the Queen definitely has that pre-dates Victoria is Queen Adelaide's Diamond Fringe tiara. The Queen Mother wore it several times as a necklace.

www.thecourtjeweller.com/2018/02/the-daily-diadem-queen-adelaides.html

I think it's unlikely we'll see the Queen wear it sadly as it's very similar to her London fringe necklace, and also very like Queen Mary's fringe tiara if it was in tiara form.

I think we'll next see it on Camilla or Catherine.

Lots of things came from Mary as there was a lot of stones gifted during her husband's reign.

Also though she didn't hand over all the jewels to QEQM when her husband died as she technically should have. She was allowed to keep them, and keep wearing them, until she died.

QEQM did the same and was allowed to keep wearing lots of significant pieces that in a stricter family would have been passed on (legally they would belong to the new Queen under the sovereign to sovereign transfer)

Well, you live and learn ... I really thought the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" was made for the Queen herself, and it turns out to have been Queen Mary (thanks, Catherine Smile). It's still definitely my favourite, though the Russian Fringe would do at a push

And no doubt I should be thinking of higher things when the TV lights focus on a royal procession, but all I can see is the BLAZE of the diamonds Blush

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/02/2020 17:13

Queen Mary didn't hand over all the jewels to QEQM when her husband died ...

Given she was supposed to be a complete magpie, I wouldn't have fancied anyone's chances of getting them off her!!

And nobody would ever accuse her of believing "less is more" ... just how many necklaces could one woman wear at a time? Shock

InfiniteSheldon · 23/02/2020 18:42

Well I've jyst spent an hour looking at tiaras Mumsnet at its finest thankyou all

7Worfs · 23/02/2020 19:29

Camilla's family tiara is also very nice and looks lovely on her daughter.

Waterandlemonjuice · 23/02/2020 22:16

Swoon at Camilla's tiara! And at her dh, back in the day, Andrew P-B (supposedly part of the inspiration for Rupert Campbell-Black)

OVienna · 23/02/2020 23:15

I have found one that Queen Alexandra is wearing that looks like a veg drainer - the sort that you can collapse that also steams veg. Massive though. I wonder if they still have them all? What if you got offered one but it didn't suit One's face shape or hair??!

7Worfs · 24/02/2020 15:24

I don’t recall seeing such a tiara, got a link or a pic at hand, OV?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/02/2020 15:37

I wonder if they still have them all?

I believe they're all still kept in a vault?

What I'd give for an hour among that lot ... Grin

lyralalala · 24/02/2020 17:10

I wonder if they still have them all?

When the Queen was offered the chance to buy back some tiaras that had gone out of the main line she "we have too much already" so I think the vaults would be epic to have a wander through

I'd be happy as a Duchess of Devonshire.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/02/2020 20:46

Loving that York tiara too; it appears my taste could be called "grand but delicate" ... which is too bad since I'll never get within spitting distance of any of them
