To wonder why Camilla is Duchess of Cornall, and Kate to be made Countess of Strathearn... When neither are Cornish or Scottish?

Ummm, I'm fairly apathectic about the Royal family in general but I do find this strange... AIBU?

Charles is Prince of Wales yet isn't Welsh. I think it's more to do with representing/ruling (take your pick) all of the constituent parts of the United Kingdom.

Groovee · 07/06/2012 17:25

Well the Duke of Edinburgh isn't from Edinburgh is he?

But surely it would be better having someone Welsh/Cornish/Scottish?

Oppsididitagain · 07/06/2012 17:26

It's all to do with traditional bequests of land but these days is just a title

Groovee · 07/06/2012 17:27

What happens if none of the soon to be spouses are Welsh/Cornish/Scottish

I believe William and Catherine got Strathearn to acknowledge their time at St Andrews

Carlia · 07/06/2012 17:28

I am genuinely surprised so many people agree with it

RobotLover68 · 07/06/2012 17:32

you've forgotten the Earl and Countess of Wessex - where IS Wessex these days?

Bathsheba · 07/06/2012 17:36

St Andrews is kind of nowhere near Strathearn - although when I grew up in Strathearn every school trip we ever went on was to St Andrews...

Northernlurker · 07/06/2012 17:37

I'm genuinely surprised so many people are so ignorant of the history and habits of this nation. Hmm

OP - we are ruled by a monarchy who pass their right to rule down by blood. With that goes a shed load of titles and some nice real estate. Has been like that for over a thousand years now.

Btw - it's not just the Royals. The Duke of Devonshire's 'seat' is where?

QueenSconetta · 07/06/2012 17:39

Camilla is also the Duchess of Rothesay.

Carlia · 07/06/2012 17:43

Northernlurker - Do you mean me?

OP posts:
diddl · 07/06/2012 17:43

Well it´s not the wives fault that they have/are entitled to their husbands titles, is it?

nagynolonger · 07/06/2012 17:45

Chatsworth derbyshire

Magneto · 07/06/2012 17:47

I agree there have been a lot of posters recently without a clue about how the monarchy works, fair enough if you're foreign but if you're British I would have thought you would have known at least some of the basics eg; succession and inheritance of titles.

It's very strange, although maybe I'm the strange one for thinking most people would know these things already.

Carlia · 07/06/2012 17:48

There is a difference between disagreeing with something and being ignorant of it

OP posts:
OldGreyWiffleTest · 07/06/2012 17:49

Camilla could be Duchess of Cornwall because she's married to the Duke of Cornwall???? Doh!

LentillyFart · 07/06/2012 17:51

I am genuinely surprised so many people agree with it

Really?

Gosh.

TheNewandImprovedMrsHollywood · 07/06/2012 17:52

OP - but you didn't say you disagreed, you said you wondered why it was in your thread title. If you were saying you disagreed with it, perhaps you should have said that.

Northernlurker · 07/06/2012 17:52

Yes I meant you. You weren't saying you disagreed with the titles, you were saying 'arf isn't it strange that's their title when they don't come from there'.

LentillyFart · 07/06/2012 17:52

I don't think you're strange magneto

chocolateandcoffee · 07/06/2012 17:56

Having lived in Northern Ireland most of my life I have never heard of this women. you have just reminded me to go and google her

Magneto · 07/06/2012 17:56

Thank you lentilly Grin

AdventuresWithVoles · 07/06/2012 17:59

Does Queen just have a list of available titles to choose from? Are the inherited, too?

nagynolonger · 07/06/2012 18:03

.The title Duke of York normally goes to 2nd born royal son. The Queen was bon Princess of York.
