Charles is Prince of Wales yet isn't Welsh. I think it's more to do with representing/ruling (take your pick) all of the constituent parts of the United Kingdom.

St Andrews is kind of nowhere near Strathearn - although when I grew up in Strathearn every school trip we ever went on was to St Andrews...

OP - we are ruled by a monarchy who pass their right to rule down by blood. With that goes a shed load of titles and some nice real estate. Has been like that for over a thousand years now.

I agree there have been a lot of posters recently without a clue about how the monarchy works, fair enough if you're foreign but if you're British I would have thought you would have known at least some of the basics eg; succession and inheritance of titles.

It's very strange, although maybe I'm the strange one for thinking most people would know these things already.

while I was googling what they wore to the jubilee yesterday [i didn't watch any of the coverage] i came across the duchess,countess or whatever of northern Ireland.

.The title Duke of York normally goes to 2nd born royal son. The Queen was bon Princess of York.
