Please help:cat needs to take her meds

My cat had a nasty fall from height 8 days ago;she has been quite seriously ill from complications from this and has arrived home tonight after her second three day stay in that time at our veterinary hospital.

she has to take 4 tablets twice a day;they are high dose steroids and a anti biotic;the steroids are extremely important as she developed a huge mass of inflammation in her stomach from physical trauma from the fall.

The vets told us they put the tablets in her kibble and she ate them while there but she’s refusing to eat for us;her evening kibble with the medication in remains untouched,we’ve mashed up some corned beef and crumbled the tablets in to tempt her and prior to this we managed to get one steroid into her by wrapping her in a towel but she was screeching and then pooped herself and it was too distressing for her and tbh seeing so distressed made me cry too.

I’m absolutely desperate to get the meds into her as she’ll decline without them and I can’t afford another vet stay;her treatments have nearly maxed out the limit of the insurance claim (£4600)-the limit is £5000

Please if anyone has any advice to get her meds into her then im willing to try it.

from a very worried cat owner

Try hiding the tablets in cream cheese, and feed from your finget
Good luck

Hope your cat is ok, we've been through similar with our boy and he's very difficult to get medication into. It's so stressful.

Hopefully the pill pockets work from now on, but if not, the options that usually worked for us were crushing the tablet up (if it's ok with that medication) and mixing it with slightly warmed up tuna, or the Aldi version lick-e-lix in Salmon. Fish tends to work as it's stinkier.

We used to hold them and with fingers in the corner of the mouth open the mouth hold the head up and drop the pill to the back of the throat then hold the mouth shut and massage the throat to make sure they swallow. It sounds more brutal than it is, one of ours could still manage to spit it out afterwards though, a vet showed us how to do it. Probably a two man job, one to hold cat and one to open mouth etc.

might not be possible with the steroids but the vet should be able to give an antibiotic injection that lasts at least a week. My cat wouldn’t take tablets & they used to do this , more expensive but worth it if you can afford it.
Speak to the vet.

Our cat is also currently on steroids and they can inject steroids, it's a 48 hour jab for the ones he's on.

I'd speak to the vet about alternatives. Our cat refuses point blank to take worming medication and everything we have tried has failed. We now get a topical preparation like the one you get for fleas. I'm sure they could give steroids by long lasting injection.

This is an alternative to the pill pockets. But you need to find a decent pet shop, they’re hideously expensive on Amazon, link just for info. My local pet shop charges about £3 per 10g packet.
