How to get cat back? Help!

Long post, sorry. We’ve been “fostering” my MIL’s cat - she’s sold her house and doesn’t get entry to the new place she’s bought until next month, then plans to get a load of work done before moving in. It’s likely to be the end of the year until she does. She’s in short term accommodation until she moves properly, and can’t have the cat there. Cat is ten, she’s had him since he was a tiny kitten, and from pretty much as soon as he was neutered he’s had free outdoor access with a catflap.

He’s settled very well with us (especially as we have a boisterous three year old cat) but has been absolutely desperate to get out from day one. So yesterday, after six weeks, was the day. We did everything right, waited until almost the cats’ dinner time, put some of his used litter round the garden, accompanied him outdoors - and he legged it straight over the back wall and won’t come back!

We know where he is, our garden backs onto other gardens, and he’s just mooching between them. He spent last night in someone’s barbecue pergola on a comfy sofa. There’s a neighbourhood watch on him and we can get a sighting, go to a garden he’s in, be right up close, and then he scrapers. MIL came round this morning and he wouldn’t come for her either. We have his litter tray in the garden, been calling non stop, and all that usual stuff, but I don’t think it’s that he’s lost (at one point he was just sat on the shed over the back laughing at me), he simply doesn’t want to come back - even though he must be starving now. Putting food out in the garden brought all the neighbourhood cats to the yard for snackies, but not him.

What next? It seems early to think about trying to borrow a trap, but I can’t actually think what else to do? We live on a very quiet one way street and he’s a streetwise lad, used to being in a much busier area than this, but I’m still worried that he’s at risk from cars if he does venture onto roads as he’s a black boy. Photo attached of him smirking at me from the shed.

You could ask a local rescue if you could borrow a trap. I'd also get some kind of camera like a door bell to see if he does wander into the garden at night so can see when to trap him hopefully.

Northernlurker · 01/09/2026 17:49

I am sure he’s gone ‘home’? did you leaflet there? Half an hours drive is very doable for a cat. They can go miles and miles.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 01/09/2026 18:40

@Shenhanigans we’re in Scotland.

@Justanopinionnothingmore we will do that if we get an idea of where he is. It would most likely trap our cat or next door’s! We do have a camera (which next door gave me actually) so need to get that set up.

@Northernlurker we haven’t leafleted there but the neighbours have been alerted.

Tonight I’ve leafleted another street and have posters up in the community centre and sports centres.

Look who it is. He won’t come but a man messaged this morning to say he was in his garden - that’s the street ours backs on to. Absolute monkey.

If you genuinely never let him out unsupervised when that's what he was used to since a baby then he's just exercising his freedom.
He needs to be able to roam around freely without you thinking about trying to trap him!

Just let him enjoy it and don't lock him in again. Shake those dreamies and I'm sure he'll come back. He's an outdoor cat just being natural.

Just delurking to say "phew!"

... so close and yet so far... 🐈‍⬛

Shenhanigans · 02/09/2026 09:47

Aw, nowhere near me. He's absolutely handsome!

JoanOgden · 02/09/2026 09:53

Honestly, what a miscreant and how worrying for you and your MIL.

It sounds like he's not on a mission to go back to his old home so that's a relief. I wonder if he dislikes Louie or something else about your house? He must be finding food somewhere.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/09/2026 09:58

@BillieWiper it’s standard to keep a cat in if they move to a new location. I suppose it’s technically worked because as far as we know based on sightings he’s always been in the vicinity of our home.

That may be true but the cat will see it as really restrictive. It seems he knows his new territory now at least!

Northernlurker · 02/09/2026 10:23

Oh thank goodness! Delighted to be wrong 😀

Defiantly41 · 02/09/2026 14:54

Keeping everything crossed for Angus

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/09/2026 16:47

Little Swine !

Yes after six weeks house arrest he's enjoying his freedom but at least you know he's stayed local .

Ours had seven weeks confinement to barracks but they'd been garden cats then CPL cats in a foster home . Never used a cap flap till we got them and they were smooshing their faces to the french doors looking at the garden
Luckily they weren't too over confident then.

Our boy now goes off down the path every morning before breakfast then comes in

Pudmyboy · 02/09/2026 17:37

Just read this thread: everything crossed for the little minx to return to your loving arms as soon as possible!💐😻💐

WWomble · 02/09/2026 17:45

Ugh, despite doing nothing wrong, what a stressful situation. At least you know he’s still around and the leaflets worked. Hope he properly returns very soon.

Puppylucky · 02/09/2026 19:28

What a handsome devil!

Amazing! Did he just walk back in by himself? He looks very satisfied with his time away!

He’d been in the gardens over the back all day, then came into our garden and wolfed a load of food around 6pm, so we just left the back door open and eventually he came in. He’s scarfed most of Louie’s dinner as well as his own so I hope he’s not sick later, but I’m so glad he’s back 🖤

Just seen this thread. Great news that he’s back! He’ll make you suffer now

the fact he was in and around your garden tells me he knows exactly what he was putting you through

Defiantly41 · 03/09/2026 22:23

Grounded! So pleased he’s back

He’s home!

@Puppylucky expect an overnight delivery 😂

Excellent news @Judystilldreamsofhorses , now double lock that door!

Wetcoatsandmudagain · 03/09/2026 22:45

That’s very typical behaviour of a cat that’s moved and been shut in. He’s just gone out and marked his new territory. He’s been busy! It takes a while to suss out how far he can go and what other cats are on the block. It’s a good sign he’s settling into his new home. Hope you are brave enough to let him back out.
