Whenever I put my cat’s food bowl down she will start scratching the floor, scratching her food mat, circling around the bowl just scratching, scratching and scratching at the floor. She will then just walk away without eating the food despite having been yowling at me for it.

She will then return to the bowl about 30 minutes later and just tuck in and finish it off without a single scratching episode 🤷‍♀️

Is this just another quirk that cat’s have?!

She just doesn’t fancy it when you first put it down so she’s trying to cover it so nobody knows where it is but her so she can come back to it later.

Ha ha I thought mine was the only cat that did this !
I was told by a few people it may be that he was taken from his mum a bit to soon so he is kneeding / making biscuits in a effort to get his mums milk / cat food but I know nothing about his early months so I don't know if that's true.
He was so enthusiastic about the scratching he'd knock his bowls over or dip his paws in his water and become extremely affronted that his fur was wet .

So I bought a little shelf that's really meant for cups / jars / spices .
It's mounted on the side of a cupboard about 4 inches off the floor
It has a 'railing ' around the edge so he can't pull his bowls off .

Its a natural cat response left over from when they lived outside. If they caught something and weren't hungry they would bury it for later to hide the scent from predators.
My feral cats used to do it. My current two are too greedy. They just eat it right away.

Cats are such monkeys arent they.

She sits outside the cupboard door where she knows her food is kept, yowls at full volume and scratches the cupboard door as if to say, “Mum I’m starving, feed me NOW!” She then meows, meows and meows at the top of her voice when she can see me preparing her food, but then as soon as I place it down for her she plays out this ritual and just walks away 🤣

Mine is from a rescue centre and although I know she came from a neglectful background I don’t know anything about her early months (she’s about 2-3 years old now but I’ve only had her for 6 months).

I have lost count of the amount of food bowls and water bowls she has upturned with her crazy scratching.

I think I will steal your solution!
