Penelope’s funny turn.

Pen Must have known her insurance was up for renewal as she’s causing trouble again! She was downstairs this morning and started mowing loudly. She couldn’t walk up the stairs properly and was panting and mouth breathing. But then could walk normally. Took her straight to the vet who noticed some nystagmus when she held her. (Not had it before) But then she was behaving completely normally. Examination was normal and she’s completely her usual self. Though the vet thought she was more jumpy than normal, which she was a bit. She’s done some bloods and waiting for results. Madam is completely fine now! If it happens again the vet will refer to neurology. Fingers crossed it was a one off.

I hope she is OK.

To give you some hope, my cat had a couple of funny turns with lots of open-mouth panting once. In the end, it was decided that it was most likely panic attacks, and he hasn't had another (that I have seen) for years.

InQuiresandplaceswheretheysing · 13/08/2026 14:16

@SilverMau it did seem almost like a panic attack. She was acting like she’d had a fright. But the nystagmus at the vet was concerning. I didn’t see it before and she’s not done it since. Her bloods have come back completely normal apart from very slightly raised calcium. Which I’m
not going to do anything about. She’s totally back to normal. It’s a bit odd.

There Was a big poo in the litter tray so I did wonder if she’d strained a but hard and had a vasovagal episode, which the vet agreed with.

It's hard when you don't have a definitive diagnosis. All you can do is hope it doesn't happen again, but if it does, go back to the Vet (which I am sure you would do anyway).

Was it your Mau that had the panic attack @SilverMau ? I can just see Marvin pulling that stunt! Hope Pen is ok

SilverMau · 13/08/2026 18:52

Yes, it was my Mau. He is a sensitive soul.

InQuiresandplaceswheretheysing · 13/08/2026 19:57

I found a big poo in the litter tray when we go home, so I did wonder if she’d been straining and had a vasovagal episode, she is prone to constipation. The vet thought it could be a likely possibility.

Penelope is also a sensitive soul, so a panic attack wouldn’t surprise me. Must have been revenge for dreaming that she’d decided we were getting another cat last night.

Heat?

I don’t think so. My house is fairly comfortable, she likes to lie on the laminate floor.

Just wondering what to do with her insurance renewal. Not happy with Tesco's massive increase, and have much better quotes. But think I’ll wait a bit, as if this becomes a problem then it’ll need covering and I’ll have to stick with Tesco, and suck it up. 😬

I’m now wondering if she bumped her head somehow. Although how, I don’t know! The symptoms of concussion in cats are exactly what she had. And she was back to normal fairly quickly.

SilverMau · Yesterday 11:07

It's possible.

Breadcat24 · Yesterday 11:28

@InQuiresandplaceswheretheysing how worrying- could she have had heat stroke?

InQuiresandplaceswheretheysing · Yesterday 13:27

@Breadcat24i don’t think so. My house isn’t unbearably hot and she hadn’t been out. She was fully back to normal by the time we left the vets. Probably an hour after it happened. And she’s been completely normal since.

Let’s hope that continues !

InQuiresandplaceswheretheysing · Yesterday 15:46

@damemaggiescurledupperlipi hope so, I’m not paying £70 a month for her insurance!
