How do you keep in the escapist cat?

My dear sweet 10 year old boy does not like being contained, he's very social and enjoys outside far more than inside.
He escapes when kept in against his will, and due to moving house next week I'm not sure how to practically keep him in.
He'll be contained to a section of the house to reduce the risk of a great escape however he has been known to jump from second storey windows and typically it will be 30+ degrees. He will hate it, hate being kept in, hate using a litter tray (not sure any of us are a fan of this) and will hate that it's so hot. He will make it known loudly and constantly how much he hates it too. There's also not a spare room that won't be getting used so the second a door is opened he'll be out like a shot.
Is there anything I can do to help him remember where he lives when he inevitably gets out?

Not really, you have to make sure he doesn’t escape.

I am currently looking after a family members cat who is DESPERATELY trying to get outside at every opportunity.

My windows are open just a cm and I am very careful with opening and closing doors. After about two weeks he stopped trying to throw himself bodily through the locked doors and windows.

I think you need to suck it up for at least two weeks before allowing him out, first thing when he’s hungry.

When I move house I put the cat(s) in their carriers before anyone arrives and put the carriers in the bath (as not going to get knocked). As long as you have a room that will be cool enough for this to be safe, I suggest this.
I let them out briefly (with bathroom door firmly closed) for litter tray and food/water just before the moving journey begins. At the other end keep them in the carrier in the bathroom until everyone has gone, then let them out ensuring all doors and windows shut.

Take him on a lead walk, though it depends on his temperament one of mine loves them the other hates them! They are both outside cats but don’t mind a lead walk to somewhere different.

With my cat we confined him to a cat carrier for a few hours. It wasn't ideal but he coped better than expected. Once in the new house, I kept him confined to the bathroom with everything he needed until everyone had gone.

You can get pop up cat enclosures for camping on amazon which also might be helpful and I'd also speak to the vet about a sedative if he gets stressed in carriers.

Make sure you update his chip ASAP!

This is what catteries are for IMO. Take him to one, for a week before the move, and the week after. Get FlatCats for the windows in your new house so you can open them without letting him out whilst he settles in!

Sorry I'm not sure I was clear, it's not moving day that worries me - it's the two weeks after!
He will cry loudly and a lot, he will take any opportunity one of the kids opens a door, it's going to be 34 degrees whilst he's in I can't leave us all (cat included!) overheating without the windows open.
Thanks for the suggestions though I may see if I can borrow a crate so he's at least outside but contained!

Keep him safe in one room while moving but also think about a catio to keep him safe

My brothers cat got our through a window that was on the catch, don’t risk it even slightly open

we didn’t believe my brother until when we, thankfully, got the cat back with large grazes all down his face and sides

I’d keep him inside in a huge crate at busy times, kids in and out etc before putting him outside in it in case he figures out how to get out of it

its going to be a terrible few weeks for you both, much better than him going missing though

“flat cats” window mesh stuff is apparently good.

Ah, in which case take a look as well at: https://www.flat-cats.co.uk/

You'll probably just have to suck up the caterwauling, but I'd recommend getting at least 4 feliway plugins to help lower is stress and anxiety at the change (2 upstairs, 2 down: 1 in his main room of each floor plus hallway/landing/kitchen)

I've seen floor to ceiling cat gates for doorways on wayfair but I've no idea if they're any good and for most of them I think a determined cat would squeeze through.
