I need help with working out how to medicate my lovely littl ragdoll. DD normally does it with no problems but she is not cooperating with me. DD is on holiday for another few days. She has inflamitory bowel disease and takes 2 pills t night.

She growls, clawas at me and bites as soon as I go anywhere near her mouth. I tried wrapping her in a towel today but that didn't stop the biting. She managed to spit tonight's pill out twice and the third time I'm not sure if he swallowed t or not.

Has anyone got any tips to make it easier.

I use pill pockets.

If you can’t get those, what is the medication? Maybe it can be crushed and mixed into food.

My kitty got anxious and accidentally bit me when I was trying to force a pill. I needed antibiotics. Be careful.

Also, tell your vet you need a medicine with an easier delivery mechanism. They usually have options.

We recently resolved some terrible digestive issues for my kitty by changing her to a prescription diet and putting her on a low dose gabapentin. She was not diagnosed with IBD but found she has a terrible reaction to any off the shelf food or treats. Just one wrong meal and she’s constipated for days, avoiding litter box and very stressed.

Gingerkittykat · 09/08/2026 04:37

She is taking prednisolone and gabapentin. She has been switched to a hydrolysed protein diet with an occasional high-quality treat and is doing well, so we are currently slowly reducing the steroids. Her only symptom was bloody diarrhoea and not constipation.

I had no idea that pill pockets existed. I have just ordered some pill putty from Amazon, which will arrive Sunday night, so it will be ready for her next dose.

I have only got a few days left till my DD comes home, but if the putty doesn't work I will talk to the vet about more palatable options. I love the antibiotics that look and smell like treats, they will happily eat them and then ask for more!

That is all good news!

Thank you for sharing those details. Always interested because it took so long to sort out my kitty. So many vets told us it was behavioral.

Her gabapentin is a powder inside of a pill that we open and mix into her food.

I used a pill syringe think for my cats 8 pills a day. However she was very cooperative.

Allergictoironing · 09/08/2026 07:57

You can crush gabapentin pills into a very fine powder, I use 2 spoons to do this.

Likeiloveyou · 09/08/2026 08:00

I used to crush my cats prednisone with the back of a teaspoon and mix it with his food. No way would he just swallow the tablet.

If all else fails, powder the meds down and mix with lik e lix.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 09/08/2026 08:41

Grab her by the scruff and lift her front feet off the floor. This will open her mouth, pop in the pills, lower her feet down but still holding her scruff stroke her throat until she swallows the meds.

This is my bitey little madam. She looks so innocent. 😹

Crush the tablets and mix with food, or if she can have them a lik-el-ix. Pill poppers can be useful, but if you're both already stressed then I wouldn't risk making things worse for the sake of a couple of days.

She is beautiful like my Missy. Mine is normally a really sweet and gentle-natured little girl, but medication, grooming the back of her thighs and claw clipping turn her into a devil cat!

We have success. I tried to give her some pill putty without a pill in it, and she just sniffed it and walked away!

I tried scruffing her like @AppleDumplingWithCustard suggested and managed to get the pill inside her quickly and with no scratching or biting.

Thanks to everyone who gave me advice.

Next time, get liquid gabapentin - it makes it so much easier! Mine has it twice a day and I just mix it on his wet food.

Gingerkittykat · 09/08/2026 22:37

She doesn't eat wet food very often, only a tablespoonful here and there.

Mine has to be sedated for claw-clipping. The vet has to do the clipping and it takes him, a nurse and me to try to keep her still even with sedation on board. And she still bites!

It’s also much more expensive! I had it for my cat. It cost a fortune! My parents cat has his gabapebtin then half a lik e lix, he absolutely loves metacam!
I have pointed out to him that he should demand a whole one.
