Helping my cat adjust to me moving out post divorce

I’m getting a divorce which means my cat is going to stay with my ex-husband in the former matrimonial home as it’s the least upheaval for him. I’m just a bit worried about the adjustment for him as I’ve always been the person who’s around more even though my ex is his special person.

Has anyone been through this and maybe would have some insight into how to navigate it so it doesn’t stress the cat?

I don’t mean this to sound awful OP, but as the cat is staying in its own home with its preferred human, I think it will be absolutely fine, cats aren’t quite that loyal! If it did have any behaviour issues they’d be for your ex to sort, i don’t think there’s much you can do in advance

I just wondered because he does go round the house howling when I’m away and he did seem quite down for a few months when his sister had to be put down. I guess I also wanted to have some views from people who’ve been in this situation - also for some solidarity.

We are reasonably amicable and my ex has reluctantly said I can come and see the cat after I move out but I don’t know if that would work long term and may confuse him further and annoy my ex.

Sorry you’re going through this OP.

I’d just get a Feliway plug in, it releases pheromones that help cats stay calm. You can start using one now as I’m sure there’s tension in the air at home that the cat may pick up on, and then it will continue to help after you’ve moved out.

Thanks for that suggestion. I’ll look into it.
