“My cats poo doesnt smell”

I have got two cats and im not use to having house cats (they can go out but choose not to) we have litter trays but my god when they poo it just absolutely reeks, even behind a closed door the smell is just out of this world stinky. I keep reading people saying their cat’s poo doesnt smell! how exactly? I’ve tried different litters etc doesnt change anything. Even my kids are complaining how stinky it is. The smell lingers for ages and yes I clean it straight away but it lingers.

Interestingly a friend has a dog that's fed on 100% meat food and it really makes a difference it terms of smell - I am hugely intolerant to the smell of dog poo, but I can be near her dog's poo without gagging. A great diet doesn't seem to have the same effect on cats though, sadly.

My dog and my last dog both had a kibble diet and neither of their poos smell.

We've had our new kitten for a month. He's fed on KatKin which is almost pure meat. No grain - no fillers at all. He does hard poos and buries them neatly. If you didn't go digging you wouldn't know he had done a poo.

He was on Metacam briefly after being neutered. Diarrhoea poos stunk the house out.

Our previous cats didn't bury their poos, for some reason, but we also didn't feed them such good food. Their poos always smelled.

I think the answer is diet. I'm sure raw is even better, but pure meat options such as KatKin and Marro are the next best. It's expensive though!

Ditto - DCat only eats KatKin and honest to god his poo is absolutely odourless, to the extent that I sometimes worry that our entire household has gone collectively nose blind. But every so often he'll snaffle something else and then we can all smell the difference immediately, so I think it genuinely does not smell.

Definitely depends what they eat, as other people have pointed out. One of my kitties ate a purely raw diet and you would not have known she’d had a poo. Of the kitties I have now, the ones who eats Katkin, very little smell. The one who eats Sheba, can be very stinky!

Another one on KatKin here - barely smells at all.

All poo smells, but healthy poo shouldn't smell awful and it certainly shouldn't linger once it's been removed from the trays.

If you use a toilet it still lingers even if it’s flushed. Maybe some people are just less sensitive to smell?

Cats are obligate carnivores and I think that 'all meat' diet means that their poo is always going to be smelly, so the only area you can really control is the type of litter you use and the type of litter tray you keep it in.

I have had lots of cats over the years and all their 💩 has stank to various degree. My current cats 💩 don’t stink at all. They eat whiskers wet food and purina dry food. It’s honestly the truth. I am not mad cat lady making that up. Well I am mad cat lady, but not making it up 😆

Could be an illness or worms or allergies. Try the vet. There's a big difference between normal poo which hardly smells, and this.

My cat's poo doesn't smell might be said instead of I can't smell my car's poo. Maybe you know people who cannot smell well?

Nope, I asked how people manage with litter trays as it’s just awful and smells so bad and lots of people told me their cats poo doesnt smell and said they couldn’t relate

My cat eats a combination of raw food and kibble. Her poo doesn’t smell. On holiday we gave her pouches instead of the raw meat - her poo stank. Home again and back to raw = no smell

MilkBreadToiletroll · 13/08/2026 08:15

My cat eats kibble and raw. Doesn't smell either. Litter tray is one of those sieve systems.
