Hand rearing a litter of 7

Has anybody successfully manage this? Mum appears to have just walked off and given up she’s still in the house like she’s out of Cat. She’s just not interested in the slightest. This is her third letter so she’s not a novice.
However, previous letters were two or three Kittens and this time there’s eight of them which is a lot for anyone. We’ve already lost one already. I’m keen to not lose any more.

You should’ve said what we’ve done so far is we’ve got them on the Royal canning baby formula
And they’re on a hot water bottle. they don’t seem very interested in the hot water bottle and move away from it

If you’ve got no experience in hand rearing kittens who are already starting to die, then I’d start contacting local rescues who will have volunteers on hand who are experienced and able to rear abandoned kittens. Though of course they will be placed for adoption later which means you will not be making any money out of them. I’m assuming the fact you are breeding the cat over and over again means you are doing it to sell the the kittens?

boohoo26 · 26/07/2026 14:21

I do have experience of raising Kittens just quite honestly not that many
No, we won’t be handing them over to anybody

Why has your cat had three litters? Is she a pedigree?

boohoo26 · 26/07/2026 14:27

She is, with respect I’m asking for tips on how to make sure there’s the best possible outcome for these Kittens.
If you have anything to add to that conversation, it will be gratefully received. If not it will be ignored thank you.

Poor mum cat 😥

I really wish I hadn’t read the litter tray this morning.
It seems to me you'd rather they died to preserve a chance you can make a few quid if they make it. Shame on you. Call a rescue and get someone who can save their lives.

Yeh I decided to bow out after that one. Fuck all the losses she’s going to have, at least she’ll make some 💰 of the ones that survive, if any do. She doesn’t really care about anything else

Poor mum cat, get her spayed! There’s plenty of rescue kittens without breeding. Says a lot about a person who won’t surrender kittens who need help!

Gardenisablooming · 26/07/2026 16:24

I was a fosterer for a charity. Once had 7 at a time when a farmer accidentally killed their dm .Unless you are unemployed and don't need sleep you simply won't manage ime.
Your dcat is banking in you doing best ny her and her babies...letting them die isn't the right thing to do here..not even for the £££ that you crave.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 26/07/2026 16:28

I think you need advice from a specialist OP- they may know how to help mum stay interested in them. How old are they? Is the vet involved yet?

My gut reaction would be to feed a few regularly so that she is less overwhelmed and can cope with the others.
There’s the cleaning and so on as well.

But I’m a total amateur.

IVFCatmomma · 27/07/2026 11:45

I'm answering in the hope little lives can be saved but please have mum cat neutered asap.

Have you tried shutting mum cat in with the babies so she can't wander?

If she's completely abandoned them then you need to feed the babies every 2 hours. Google Kitten feeding chart for hand rears for how often to feed them. Be very careful and feed them on their fronts (e.g. how they would feed from mum) as they can very easily aspirate and die.

You will need to take care of their toileting as well before and after feeds - stimulate their bottoms and they'll do their stuff.

They CANNOT regulate their temperatures so will need a heat source constantly until around 4 weeks of age.

Weigh them every day to ensure they are gaining weight - it should be 10g per day.

Kitten Lady has good guides.

Don't be too pig-headed to accept help. A local rescue will know what to do.

OneNaiceSnail · 28/07/2026 00:50

It’s ok everyone. She’s got royal canin and a hot water bottle they keep falling off. She’s clearly a pro 👍🏻

MrSchubertWhiskers · 28/07/2026 00:54

You really need to reach out to a rescue with experience of handrearing kittens @boohoo26

And do it before other posters come here expressing disapproval at you breeding because I suspect you'll ignore the thread from that point.

It’s too late for that 🫣

I don't often use this username but it seems appropriate here.
Those poor kittens need someone experienced with hand rearing. The odds of survival for hand rears aren't great but even lower with someone inexperienced.
Situations like this make me so angry but you likely will refuse to read this.
You are breeding your cat while rescues are overrun with never ending waiting lists. This is on top of the welfare of poor mum cat who is being used to make you money. Please get her neutered.
Take some time looking at social media posts of rescues from the large to the small and they are all struggling due to the numbers needing help. You are adding to the problem.
I hope these babies survive but please stop breeding.
