Larry the Downing Street cat

I don’t have a cat so this is a genuine question. Apparently Larry the Downing St cat is about to ‘welcome’ his 7th Prime Minister since he came to Downing St 15 years ago. Will this be traumatic for him? I have no idea who actually feeds/looks after Larry, presumably it’s a government employee rather than the actual Prime Minister but given that civil servants will also rotate through Downing St what will be the impact of the constant change of ‘owners’ on Larry? Most cats only have one owner for their entire lives so is this likely to be upsetting for him or are cats ultimately more attached to places than people?

Apparently Burnham has a dog. No idea if dog is moving into No 10 or not but if so I hope that doesn’t upskittle Larry.

Larry has seen off Dilys (BoJo’s dog) in the past. Larry was there first.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 21/07/2026 16:05

Keir’s kitten Prince and rescue cat Jojo have left no 10.

Pinkbox · 21/07/2026 16:05

Someone said Mrs B isn’t moving in so the dog could live with her? I always assumed there was a Larrycam so the front door openers know when he needs attention!

Quite. My money is on Larry. Others must know their place, and that includes prime ministers and their pets.

MyThreeWords · 21/07/2026 16:07

Not sure he is too fussed about who the prime minister is. Perhaps he's worried that there will be a rival cat at Number 10 North, though.

Plus he’s an old man! He needs to be shown respect by a mere dog.

New chancellor apparently doesn’t own any animals as his family dog died in recent years. Phew! Larry is safe.

Axel the dog a Bichon Poo and also a rescue is Burnham’s pet.

murasaki · 21/07/2026 16:56

Definitely betting on Larry in that case.

I suspect that Andy Burnham is just worried that Larry will pop his clogs on his shift. Bit like the 'london Bridge' scenario for the late queen - I wonder what has been planned for Larry.

A state funeral?

A state funeral?

St Pawl's would be fitting.

SevenYellowHammers · 21/07/2026 17:25

They were a long time letting him into number 10 yesterday when I was watching live from Downing Street on bbc. I think there was something going on because he had to wait for ages.

It would.

I love Larry so much, he's a star!

And we're extra fond as he's the absolute spit of the cat we had when the kids were young - he was another excellent stripey moggy (and also a great mouser) 😍

UncannyToad · 21/07/2026 20:28

Larry’s badass! He chased a fox away a few years ago, and caught a pigeon in front of shocked film crews, as well. Fox chasing -

I can’t abide the sanctimonious Larry the Cat twitter account and have to actively remind myself that it’s not really him…

I was going to say I follow Larry on Twitter and it appears he’s just fine with the new situation

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/07/2026 20:36

Would Larry notice or even care that a new Prime Minister has moved in ?
By about Thursday , he'll fix Andy with a steely look and say "You dyed your hair , Kier?"

Cnon · 22/07/2026 06:56

A cool Larry video!

Wirkwirk · 22/07/2026 07:29

Apparently that cat is now 20yo. Imagine being Larry's last PM!

According to Larry's SM he's most put out that Burnham has a dog!

He didn’t like BoJo’s dog and apparently frightened him.

Nothing has changed for Larry. Same home, same territory, same police officer to open the door for him, same bunch of people inside, same bunch of clattering photographers outside, same sleeping places... The only thing that's changed is that some of the hoomans have gone, to be replaced by others, and he's used to that. He will be far more bonded to the housekeeping staff and whoever feeds him than to any Prime Minister.

As to the future - a splendid bronze statue methinks.

There so should be! And if there isn't us Larry fans should petition for one!

SqueakyDinosaur · 22/07/2026 11:16

A journalist friend tells me that her team has an obituary of Larry ready to go when the sad day comes. I imagine most news organisations are in the same boat.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 22/07/2026 14:01

Halsall · 21/07/2026 15:52

One of the photographers who spends a lot of time camped outside has taken on the job of going up and knocking on the door so Larry can be let in. I saw a very entertaining little feature about it.

Lindsay Hoyle (Speaker of the House of Commons) has two cats, Clem and Attlee, but they're rather more pampered than Larry (he also has Boris the parrot and Maggie the tortoise).

I've seen pictures of him cosying up with some of the journos and photographers over the years and sitting on their laps etc.

He's magnificent but he does need a good brush!

AlwaysRightISwear · 22/07/2026 21:37

Larry survived Jobson's terrier Dilyn who was reported badly trained and poorly behaved. I'm sure he can cope with Burnham cute little bichon cross.
