Do cats have ESP ? (Extra sensory perception)

My boy (but less so his sister) has weird behaviour.. my dad has never really been what I would call a cat lover , but he adores my boy. My mum and dad come and visit randomly.. once or twice a week on average but no set time or regular routine . Might be a Wednesday afternoon or a Saturday morning.. they don’t ring they text to say they will be in nearest town for lunch or shopping.. so even if the little bugger has learned English I doubt he could read and know my password . and yet .. when they are ten minutes away - he will haul his lazy arse off of my bed and take up sentry duty on top of our post box - right next to where they park ! He is literally waiting for them !! The routine is fine always identical .. sad opens the car door .. Julian (he’s a moggy with delusions of grandeur) jumps off the post box and on to his lap and sits there with his ‘hands ‘ on fje steering wheel until dad says ‘ I expect you want dreamies’ .. and then they both come into fje house .. where he makes a lot of fuss of dad before he plinks himself on mums lap…

an someone give me a logical explanation as to how he knows they are coming ? The only thing that usually stirs him from sleep is food..

anyone else have this weird behaviour from their feline overlords. ?

No idea but that’s just adorable! My boy has a way of knowing if I’m sad and making me feel better. He also comes to meet me in the street when I come home but those aren’t as magical as Julian’s talents.

I love this! Julian is so sweet 😻 I think moggies are excellent at detecting patterns that we might not notice. I also think they are psychic. I’ve done experiments with my girl, where I psychically call her to come for a cuddle. Roughly half the time she will show up. 🤷‍♀️ Part of their power over us is their mystery.

toomanycoffeecups · 28/06/2026 12:44

Apologies. How could I forget the tax !
Ill pay double .. Julian and his sister .. (who loves a box)

Do you tidy up when they're on their way?

OutOfApricots · 28/06/2026 13:05

Yeah, they know. I don't know how they know, but they do.

Years ago, one of mine would dash down the garden path and sit waiting to greet me as I came home. Sure, you think, they recognise the sound of your car's engine and can hear you coming from afar. But when I'd just collected my new car that day... how did they know it was me driving it?

InQuiresandplaceswheretheysing · 28/06/2026 13:08

That so cute! No idea how he knows!

Good point.

Bjorkdidit · 28/06/2026 13:34

Of course they do.

They know when they have an appointment at the vets and disappear until its too late to make the appointment.

Once I merely thought about giving them tuna for tea and all 4 of them, who had previously been sleeping, got up to sit by their bowls.

If you are sitting and think about getting up, they will appear and sit on your lap so you cannot move.

My parents live in Ireland. I’m in England. When I would go to visit them, their cat would always “know” when I was about to arrive.

Didn't they make preparations for you? Change the bed in our room, put towels there, open the window?

NoDramas · 28/06/2026 20:10

Those things may all have happened but she was an outdoor cat so never got to see the inner workings of the house unless I coaxed her in on my visits (much to my parents dismay!)

toomanycoffeecups · 28/06/2026 22:22

No… no tidying up.. as my mother wisely once said.. not one human lays on their death bed wishing they had done
more housework and spent less time with those they love most…. Besides the little one loves a mess, she has three double beds six cat baskets, two over radiator snuggle holes and two home-made boxes to choose from. Her preference will always be to seek out the messiest most disorganised place , crumpled newspaper old rags you name it if it’s uncomfortable and messy she will be asleep on it ..

Mine always know when I'm meditating. They can be fast asleep upstairs or playing outside, but when I sit, it's like a klaxon has gone off and they come rushing to poke, prod and generally distract me... They must feel the cosmic vibes...
