Tabby stays out most of the day in the heat

We let him come and go as he pleases but he is spending more time than usual outside. I had thought he might prefer to be indoors.

He may be chilling in the opposite neighbour's garden (there's a water feature of some sort there) but not sure.

He seems fine, comes in and out for food, snacks and water.

Am guessing that's OK? How common is it?

Mine's the same although I keep enticing him to lie in the shade rather than the direct sun and make him come in to the dark hallway and cold floor to mix it up a bit. Left to it he'd sit in the sun all day every day.

Mine are the same. My 2 females disappear for hours, pop home for dinner and are off out again, usually all night. My males are home boys and just find somewhere cool in the house or garden.

When the weather reverts to 'normal' they'll all be very close to home and stay in overnight.

My cat doesn’t want to be indoors at all!

I’ve created her a lovely shaded area outside with her cat tree, cat bed, toys etc and regularly replace her food and water and she doesn’t move from it all day.

To be fair, most of the time it’s far cooler outside than it is in the house 🥵

Are you sure he’s outside and not in someone else’s house?

Mine has been AWOL for two days, came in today and lay in front of our fan. I suspect she’d spent the previous two days in front of someone else’s fan or a/c unit.

Don’t forget that modern cats are descended from desert animals and are very able to cope in the heat.

SaraBarca1 · 26/06/2026 22:42

Two of mine move entirely outside from June to September, one sleeps in the trampoline in the back garden and the other sleeps on the front lawn. They both come in for food, water and a quick stroke. Both bask in the sun and seem very happy with the heat. When it gets colder they come inside, sleep on our beds and are much friendlier.

He might be, although he's not a very sociable cat, doesn't really like people! He tends to bring his friend, a ginger cat, over for a play date....

Yes I read this, and it's reassuring!

Yes, exactly this. I miss him!

My tortie is like a proper sun worshipper! Every time I look outside she’s stretched out on her back sunbathing.

Two of mine love the heat and will literally sunbathe.
The other two seek shade.

Chimneyissues · 27/06/2026 09:37

My vet put a notice out about keeping cats in. Mines out all day, he’s filthy so I suspect he’s hanging out somewhere damp and dark.

Jasmin71 · 27/06/2026 10:04

They seek shelter outside and frustrate the hell out of you worrying about them. It's hard I know. But a healthy cat has more tolerance to heat than we do because of their ancestry. Doesn't stop me wanting mine to just come in though and use all the cooling stuff I have tried to sort out!

Namechangedforthis60 · 27/06/2026 10:07

Mine seem to be a split (I have too many cats!)
A couple I barely see in the summer, they’re always in the garden and come in for food and the occasional cuddle. The others are all indoor, it’s definitely been hotter inside than out though and it’s been a mission to keep them cool enough. Bought mats and fans and a water fountain etc and they’ve not touched any of it! One was panting when it was 36 degrees so I had to get her damp (which she hated) and cool her off!
Currently fostering a mama and her two kittens as well until they go to their forever homes so I’ve been so worried about keeping them comfortable in this heat!

Piglet89 · 27/06/2026 10:10

Mine is exactly the same! She lies in a bush at the bottom of the garden in the shade but comes out to greet me when I’m out on the lawn hanging out washing and whatnot.

HelpMeGetThrough · 27/06/2026 10:16

My neighbours cat has taken daily residence under a bush in our front garden, he’s sorted.

I’ve got a bucket of water out the back for the birds and he was there the other day, having a drink. He’s got zero interest in the birds or they him. As soon as he’s had a drink, he’s back under the bush.

He’s a daft bugger, but lovely. I need to get some photos of him.

SquirrelGG · 27/06/2026 10:38

I hardly saw my cats in summer. They know how to take care of themselves and will seek a shady place if hot.
