Local cat staging a dirty protest in my garden

Hi, after some advice please! I have recently taken ownership of a lovely 7 year old cat. She has been an outdoor cat for most of her life so I don’t want to deprive her of that. I keep her in at night for safety but let her out in the day.

There are lots of other cats in the area, and one in particular has taken great offence at her presence. Every day I wake up to giant piles of poo in my garden. I could deal with that if it weren’t for the fact that this cat is clearly not healthy or well looked after. I’m sure it’s the same cat and it’s literally 4 or 5 piles of huge wet diarrhoea. It’s disgusting and absolutely stinks. I have fake grass (yes I know 😂) so I have to wash it which is a truly horrible experience

Any ideas what I can do? I know you can put things down but I don’t want to affect my own cat

Is it definitely another cat, there's a risk of your cat catching an infection or worms if it's diarrhoea.,

Are you sure it's not a fox? Be odd behaviour for a cat.

Some years ago my garden was visited by a cat that clearly had intestinal problems as it would just suddenly relieve itself of very runny poo.
Just so that I didn't find piles of liquid excrement in random places, I made a cat toilet in a part of my garden: a square of nice soft earth with a deeper hole nearby to shovel the used contents into.
It didn't solve the problem but did contain it.
Any chance that could be an option for you?

How are you sure it's one cat doing this?

MarieBag · 22/06/2026 16:03

Could you cat proof your garden? Keep your cat in the garden and other cats out?

Thats so grim :(

That’s definitely worth a go, thank you!

I’m not completely sure but I suspect. Its chased my cat a couple of times and used to come in my garden quite a lot. She also goes into the neighbours house next door quite often. I have caught her in my garden a couple of mornings recently

Hmmm. Not sure how I could. There are high fences but the cats can all climb up and over them.
