What goes through his furry mind?

My cat likes to pull the lining out of mine / DH’s trainers and put something dead in there. We know this so generally remember to put them in the cupboard.

I forgot last night and sure enough he’s pulled the lining out and popped a massive dead moth in there.

(a) what goes through his furry mind?
(b) why just DH and I? In general he prefers my teens but they are never fortunate enough to receive such a gift.

  1. He is bringing you a present
  2. He is placing the precious object in a safe place, protected by your smell.
It’s adorable. Except for the moth in your shoe. Cat Two puts gumnuts in mine.

Come on - would YOU spend long enough with your nose in close proximity to a teenager's trainers to pull the lining out? 😂

SardinesOnButteredToast · 15/06/2026 07:03

My cat is ginger, so I know with no doubt whatsoever that absolutely nothing enters or exits his furry brain.

fluffyfurryfeatherythings · 15/06/2026 07:04

Our cat used to put a dead mouse on or under my son's baby chair when he was little. Every 2 or 3 days.

It's definitely a gift to say I love you. My son was too young to feed him so it wasn't a thank you.

We follow the advice to play predator/prey chasing games with our cat 10 mins a day so he doesn't hunt - it works so we just get the purrs and strokes now instead.

Yes, they do say it’s a gift. It’s quite handy he pulls the lining out first when it’s a dead mouse. They are thankfully very rare though. Highdays and holidays really. The moth is his gift of choice. A maybug if he’s thinking ‘seasonal gifts’.

@Allergictoironingthis is an excellent point re DS. DD is quite clean though. Perhaps he doesn’t like the overwhelming scent of Victoria’s Secret that follows her around.

@SardinesOnButteredToastthis is a ragdoll so I’m not sure the thought lingers for long. In fact, I’m surprised he’s as good at hunting as he is.

@fluffyfurryfeatherythingsinteresting. DH feeds him, I buy the food though and there’s no way he could understand that. The internet suggests he may doubt my ability to catch my own moth. He’d be right there.

Ah that would make very sweet sense!
Perhaps he thought he was helping to feed my son when he was small.
How very adorable.

I'm not sure we'll ever really understand the cat brain. It would be nice to have cat psychologist, so is could better understand the big weirdos. But It is said those that have studied in the field went insane before they qualified.

Also this.

Think yourself lucky. Once upon a time I went out into our garden and the cat had left the decapitated torso of a rabbit right beside toddler dc's play slide.

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 15/06/2026 13:58

@pinneddownbytabbiesthe dog is the rabbit catcher. On the plus side he doesn’t leave them in my trainers.

@JeremiaBoogle it is a field worthy of study! I have a cat and a dog. The gulf between them in terms of how I understand their thought process is vast. Dog is happy if fed and given some affection. Happy to pay that back to me on almost any terms.

Cats are far more complex in their outlook.

My old ginger tom brought me a live but stunned seagull for breakfast once, I'd much have prefered a shoemoth 😂

"Cats are far more complex in their outlook"

I sometimes feel like you have to earn their respect on a daily basis!

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 16/06/2026 19:46

@pinneddownbytabbiesnow you mention it I work with a human who is a bit like that. You can work through some massive catastrophe together and feel you’ve earned some ‘currency’. But…no… a few months later when the next shitshow starts you are right back at the start.

I realise now it’s because she is a cat!

@TomatoSandwicheswhat on earth did you do with such a gift? Seagulls are quite a size close up and not something you can spread on toast.
