What to do with elderly cat?

We have had a cat hanging around on our road for the past year (possibly longer), he is covered in matted hair, ticks, fleas and is elderly. He is not chipped and not castrated, due to not being castrated he gets into a lot of fights so has a few injuries/scratches. A few weeks ago he entered my house and I noticed many large ticks on him. I attempted to find his owners which was successful. They assumed the cat was dead so we’re shocked to hear he’s alive…..but they didn’t seem concerned about him and when I offered to box him up so they could collect him they didn’t reply. They said he’s a Tom cat so does his own thing 🤨.

This morning it’s chucking it down with rain and the cats just led outside in it, I think he has cat dementia because he doesn’t seem to notice or care that he’s getting wet. He’s now in my house because I couldn’t let him just lie in the rain. What can I do if the owners won’t come and collect him and won’t provide any care for him? I told them he needs to be treated for ticks and needs to see a vet, they know where he is and won’t come collect him. I feel sorry for the poor thing.

Take him to a vets which do the £10 cats protection society’s neutering scheme. You’ll have to pay the £10 but the vets will sort him out and give him back to you with the understanding you’ll keeping feeding him and looking after him as a feral/stray.

Sadly there isn’t one near by, there also isn’t a blue cross within a hour and a half drive. I would worry about taking him too far as it would likely really stress him out.

He disappeared for 2 days and has now returned for breakfast this morning, he definitely has several homes around the village (or people that put food out for him), I think I am the only one that’s got close enough to treat him. I feel that he enjoys being a stray, but that’s likely due to the original owners never castrating him so he’s always strayed looking for females…..though I don’t think he is no longer capable.

A little update.

The cat turned up at my door this morning with an injured leg, he could barely bare weight on one of his back legs and had a visible injury. I contacted his owner, offered to box him up so they could take him to the vet. They agreed and I delivered him to their address. Late in the day they messaged me saying he had received treatment but they were unable to keep him, they had contacted cats protection who refused to take him.

So, long story short……he is now my cat.

Apparently he has had a pain killer injection and an antibiotic. He seems very sleepy and is currently asleep on my living room floor. I am going to try and keep him in for a few days, he has access to my garden and due to his injury he can’t jump the fence. I have contacted cats protection to see if I can get a voucher for castration. I will let his leg heal first and then he will be castrated and chipped (hopefully).

Bless your heart @Moonlightfrog , what a lovely person you are.

Poor old boy, I'm glad he found his way to someone who will love and care for him ❤️

Thank you for taking this poor cat in. He will repay you a hundred times over with his love and affection. I'm sure CPL still gives neutering vouchers. Once he's been neutered he'll stop fighting, spraying and settle down as a loving companion.

The vet thinks his leg injury is from a cat bite/fight.
He’s been so affectionate since they brought him back, almost as though he knows he’s now here for good…..though he might just be high in the pain killer the vet gave him.
