Do boy cats spray constantly?

I really want a boy kitten as I have a girl cat and just would love the contrast. I'm just worried about him spraying all over furniture etc and my house smelling of cat pee constantly. I would be getting him neutered when he was at the right age. Just curious to know, does your male cat spray in your house?
Also do they pee normally in the litter tray and is the spraying that they do different from peeing normally?

Mine have never sprayed. Always got them castrated asap.

Our boy cat uses the litter tray. The stray un neutered tom sprays on everything.... the kitchen door, the dustbin 😞 best get them neutered as soon as possible

no.

but be aware cats aren’t particularly sociable. Introduce a new cat into a small house and you risk the cat, male or female, starting to scent mark their territory.

i had a female cat that scent marked. Once I separated her and she was an only cat household it stopped.

I've had 4 boy cats - never.

Never had spraying but he does do the tail wiggle/back leg padding motion but nothing comes out!

P.S. spraying is entirely different to weeing.

Mine has weed outside the box once when he had a UTI.

Over 60 years of male cats. None have ever sprayed.

Never had a full Tom though.

Shedmistress · 07/06/2026 12:41

I had a nearly 3 Yr old feral boy in my house for a month 2 months ago, he didnt spray once. Peed on the pee pads and any horizontal surface yes (hence having to buy a new mattress after his first day indoors), but that was because he wanted to go outside and was in distress every time he needed to go, but by the end he was mostly peeing in one litter tray and pooping in the other.

Indeed none of our male cats who mainly live outside, as they are all ex ferals, spray indoors when they venture inside. The one cat that does spray inside is the sterilised mum of 4 of them. So she is not allowed to come in.

Never had a problem with any of my neutered male cats spraying with the single exception of one who briefly weed outside the tray which was a sign of a urinary infection.
My first cat was an intact male stray who moved in with me. He didn't even spray before he was done.

Iloveeverycat · 07/06/2026 12:48

Mine has never sprayed he is 19. Neither have any of my other cats I had in the past.

Tygertiger · 07/06/2026 12:53

No, neutering is key. Neutered males don’t seem to be inclined to spray.

I would caution though that your female is unlikely to welcome a new kitten with open arms - adult cats which have lived alone tend to prefer that arrangement and when I’ve had this scenario in the past, the resident female was very hissy towards the kittens and would scratch at them - she never really accepted them. If you want to do it I would get a pair of kittens so they will play with each other rather than try to engage with her and then keep them completely separate at first, building up to very gradual interactions (eg first just being in the room the other has been in, then being able to hear them but not see them, then see but not physically interact etc). Feliway plug-ins help too.

I've had a lot of cats - mostly rescues- male & female. The only one who ever reguarly peed inappropriately was very damaged by his life before he came to me.

Male or female, cats only pee inappropriately if there's something wrong: usually because theyre either ill or something has got them highly stressed, and typically it'll be a one off.

I wouldn't hesitate to get boy kitten - they pee just like any other cat in the litter tray, although worth noting that male cat pee is more pungent than female cat wee so you'll want to freshen the litter more frequently.

WonderingWanda · 07/06/2026 13:01

As others have said my male cat was neutered as soon as possible and has never sprayed. Only time he wee'd on the floor was when he had a stress induced uti.

Yetanotherone12 · 07/06/2026 13:15

I actually find boy cats better with the litter box- they face in so it’s directed to the centre of the box 🤣

girl parts face backwards, so it’s not unusual for my girl to crouch at one end and pee on the floor behind the box. I’ve had to get a huge litter tray for her.

she stinks far worse than any male cat I’ve had. But she never bothers covering any of it 🙄

YoBetty · 07/06/2026 13:32

Male cats need to be neutered as soon as they are old enough. Leave it too long, and they learn to spray mark their territory. Once they've got used to doing it, they will probably carry on doing so even after they are neutered.

Bitzee · 07/06/2026 13:39

I’ve only ever had boy cats, neutered as early as possible and none of them have sprayed. There’s been the odd accident due to injury, ill health, accidentally being trapped in a bedroom by the kids but that’s just a cat thing not a boy cat thing.

tiramisugelato · 07/06/2026 18:48

No, never, but they're all neutered ASAP.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/06/2026 19:31

All our boy cats have been snipped and never sprayed. They have also all been super affectionate.

lordbaddingham · 07/06/2026 19:31

Never here

user293948849167 · 07/06/2026 19:32

We had a male and he never sprayed, he was neutered

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 07/06/2026 20:25

We have brother and sister both neutered. He doesn't spray and he buries his pooh ( unlike his sister). He also likes to pee right in the corner to make it difficult to scoop out ( little swine)!!
He does like turning his back to the sofa that we tell him not to scratch and lifts his tail, twitches his back and eyeballs me " no I'm not going to piss on your IKEA Erktop but I could"

dementedpixie · 07/06/2026 21:18

I have 2 males. They have never sprayed indoors. They were neutered at 4 months old as recommended
