Cat weeing in house, at the end of my tether

He’s a house cat. This has been going on sporadically for years. He’s been to the vet, no health issues. Vet gave me a leaflet on stress weeing. We use the diffusers, cystease sprinkled on his food. He’s wrecked a sofa, numerous duvets. He hasn’t done it for ages and now weed on the expensive mattress twice this week. No reason why he’d not wee for ages and then wee.

there are three litter trays in the house and he will use them.

im beginning to think it might be boredom due to not going outside. I had him a catio built last year which he can access anytime he wants and that hasn’t helped.

i am going to go back to the vet and ask about fluoxetine which i ve read about but vet never mentioned. Or I start letting him outside? Hes a pedigree and I worry about him being stolen. Was looking at trackers today. Ultimately he’s a cat and yes he might get stolen or run over but if he’s miserable inside is it worth the risk?

Has he used his catio?

My pedigree wees when hes stressed, he got out once (chasing a cat that had got into the cat proofed garden) and it stressed him out for months so letting him out may make things worse! Have you had a behaviourist in?

Larrythecatforpm · Today 12:48

He sounds stressed. Also whenever he pees somewhere, clean it properly and put food down. It will train him to think thats a food area and he won’t pee where he eats. It works.

Have you tried different litters? I only ask because we had this issue and changing litter solved it even though he'd previously used the other brand. It was MN advice too Grin

Let him out. A catio is not a substitute for a cat being allowed to roam, hunt and explore.

OctaviaLemon · Today 13:00

Cats are outside animals. They need space to roam, hunt and be a cat. Keeping them confined in a house is stressful for them because it is unnatural. Sadly, I doubt whether there is anything you can do to stop this behaviour.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · Today 13:12

Actually get him a tracker and just let him out.

Sadly imo your dcat just wants to be, well a dcat. Not a house pet..
Ime we lost 1 to a car. But lots of happy dcats before and after being allowed to roam. Current dcat stays in the garden only at 14....

The enzymatic spray is good for the smell of the pee, it’s expensive though at £8 a bottle, I use the one called simple solution. You have my sympathies as I have a young cat who was stressed but he’s getting better and he’s banned from any room with soft furnishings unless I am present. Also he is going out now on a harness to start with he seems to be very stimulated by the outside world.
