Why does my cat’s vomit look like this? (sorry, photo warning)

We’ve had our lovely rescue cat since October. She was pretty unwell when we got her (we didn’t realise this at the time), but a change of diet put her right. Not to mention spaying.
Very recently, she has been sick a couple of times. But the food is coming up pretty much undigested.
This food has been brilliant and stopped the diarrhoea she came to us with in its tracks. But I’m a bit concerned at this latest development.
I wouldn’t describe her as a greedy cat, but it does surely point to an animal that eats too quickly.
I will also mention that she is tiny. She’s a year old but has stunted growth due to having a litter too young 😞 I will probably go back to carefully measuring out her food, rather than put too much in her bowl and expect her to self-regulate. The food is Scrumbles sensitive (dry food).
Unfortunately PetPlan have written anything gastro related out of her insurance.
Should I be worried?
Thanks.

Can’t see the pic but I have a cat that vomits at any opportunity.

he was the runt of the litter and I think just has delicate digestive system (which he refuses to listen to and insists on eating any old shit).

JMSA · 15/05/2026 09:42

Sorry, pic didn’t work. But if you can imagine dry food coming back up, pretty much in its original form!

If our cat bolts his food he sometimes very soon after pukes up what appears to be exactly what he ate. It happens rarely now (we've had him for just over two years), but he'd been a stray kitten and would just absolutely wolf his food when we got him. Now he's much more of a grazer.

JudgementalCat · 15/05/2026 09:45

One of mine does that too. I think he was taken from his mum too young, eats too fast and possibly has hairballs. It has happened a lot less since I found a hairball on the carpet last month.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/05/2026 09:46

Oh, we used a puzzle feeder at the beginning - we had it for our previous cat as a "game" which we'd put treats in for her, but we ended up using it as a food bowl for this hooligan for a little while. It seemed to break the cycle and now he has normal food dishes.

JMSA · 15/05/2026 10:06

Thanks everyone! Reassuring to know that it’s not just us.

I have one like this. He was dumped on the street, so lots of food insecurity. He's 7 now and it's far less frequent. A very flat dish with the food spread out has helped. This is him.

We have one similar, we bought a slow feeder bowl that she has to work hard to get her food out of, it sorted the problem!

MissMoneyFairy · 15/05/2026 15:33

Have you seen a vet, does she have a normal size oesophagus and stomach, has she had a blood test done and is she wormed.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/05/2026 15:56

I wouldn’t rush to the vet for this (and I am a super anxious pet owner!) without trying obvious solutions. Some cats are greedy scarf and barf merchants. I’d be more concerned about random vomiting at other times personally, and would just keep an eye on her for now.

(I thought our boy was having some sort of fit earlier in the week, weird head shaking and pawing at his mouth. Poised to dash to the vet. I got him in a headlock and realised he had a blade of grass sticking out of his mouth, which I then gently pulled - it was massive and obviously had been sitting right back to his throat. Problem solved. He’s ginger.)

@JMSA How many times do you feed her each day? I was wondering whether little and often might suit her better.

One of our three is tiny and she sometimes throws up because she's gorged herself on too much at once.😂

purser25 · 15/05/2026 16:59

Raise her food bowls it helped with ours who was plain greedy and wolfed his food down he was a rescue though you can use an upturned bowl or I got a raised stand from to max with two bowls in it.

Hattermadness · 16/05/2026 10:54

Our cat has always had a delicate stomach, we could never figure out why until we started doing some research and eliminating things...turns out if she has anything with tapioca starch in it bounces straight back up. She's now on katkin and is much better (only taken us 11 years lol) although she does occasionally have a day when she is sick a few times. She also uses an anti gulp mat which helps loads too.
100%recommend katkin food no nasties or additives xx

JudgementalCat · 16/05/2026 12:18

What slow / raised feeders do you recommend? I've seen a couple on Amazon - pictures might take a while to load.

Get a slow feeder. I had a ginger cat years ago who would bolt his food, vomit it up, then eat it again Hmm A slow feeder and no free-feeding solved the issue.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 16/05/2026 13:13

One of mine is a vomit comet. She is fat to put it bluntly, because she will hoover up anything and everything. Too much food and it comes back almost the same consistency as it went down.
The only solution I’ve found is to a) limit her intake to small, but regular portions every 2 hours and b) stand guard over the other cats while they eat, so she doesn’t lunch more than her share.

He is magnificent!😍

He really is. He's currently not speaking to me because I dared take him to the vet for his health check and booster vaccines. Fortunately I have 4 others who still love me.

BillieWiper · 16/05/2026 14:23

Mine just bolts food sometimes and yeah it just comes straight back out. It's pretty normal cat behaviour. You just need to serve smaller portions. If you notice it with a certain brand switch to a sensitivity brand.

I have the one on the left, it’s good and solid too

CatLovesMeBest · 17/05/2026 14:34

My cat used to do the same, it was because she bolted her food. I bought a Trixie slow feeder and it’s really improved things, It’s good for both wet and dry food and relatively easy to clean as it has narrow but deep grooves. Good luck !
