Do most owners of outdoor cats provide a litter tray indoors?

I was just listening to Sliced Bread on Radio 4 about kitty litter. The woman who was being introduced as wanting to know which type of litter was best to use said that she was new to having to deal with kitty litter as this was the first time she'd owned an "inside cat". The implication was that she'd previously owned "outside cats" and didn't ever provide a kitty litter for them. I was quite surprised by this and wondered how common it is that cat owners just expect their cats to defecate on other people's property. My neighbour has two cats who roam around outside, but have a litter that they use inside. (They also poo outside.) I don't have a cat or dog, but I do have a front and back garden where I grow fruit and vegetables. And it's cost me quite a lot to cat-proof my soil with scat mats and netting so that the neighbourhood outside cats don't use it as their toilet. Are cat owners comfortable with that or do they think their cats are considerate and only poo on wasteland rather than in their neighbours' gardens?

Yes, as my older kitten started using my larger houseplant pots as her personal toilet! She refused to go outside in the winter weather to toilet.

My girl toilets outside but does have a tray upstairs & downstairs for when shes in at night. She goes outside through her own choice whereas previous cats used their trays regularly. Must say my house smells a lot fresher with her going outside.

I do. We live on a farm so the cats have plenty of our own land to poo on (mostly they choose the horsey muck heap - I have no idea why!). However, they are big wimps and if another cat or a badger comes by, they get scared and prefer to poo in safety indoors. Most of the year the tray sits untouched.

We have 3 scattered about the house for one 15 year old cat and recently they have been getting used more frequently. When she was younger we probably didn't have any at all but then she started doing it in the bath/on the bathmats etc so we put a tray in then another then another.

We will add to the family when she goes and are planning on letting them free roam past a year old, will keep 4 trays and maybe an outdoor space in my own garden but that's all I can do.

I can't stop a cat from going to the toilet outside if they choose and until it's not legal to let your cats roam then it is what it is.

Yes I provide one because I lock her in at night and I don’t want her to be caught short. She tends to hang on until we let her out in the morning though if she can do. She poos in our garden

Yes we do because we haven’t got a flap and we get her in at night. She doesn’t use it much.

With previous cats I haven’t because we’ve had cat flaps but impossible to fit in this house.
