Bathroom windows and cat

Hi, we are more litter tray into bathroom. There's no extractor fan in there. DD is worried cat will jump out of window if I open them for ventilation
There are two windows, both UPVC top opening - photos below.
A single window which is above toilet so she could jump onto toilet then the window.
A larger window above the bath that with some jumping she could potential get to.
I've seen things like screens and mesh protectors online and don't know what is best.

Would really welcome your advice please.

We got flatcats screens last summer when we got our 2 kittens & they have been brilliant. Not only for keeping the cats safe, but added bonus at stopping the bugs from flying in the house. Very reasonable price also, we’ve now added them on all but one of our windows!

I second flat cat screens. They are amazing.

I don’t think a cat would try to get through those type of windows. Is it an indoor cat because surely a cat which has access to outdoors would just stroll downstairs and out through the door or cat flap? One of my two cats is fairly young and athletic - albeit quite nervous - but jumping on to the windowsill to snooze in the sun would be as far as she’d go. Actually she’d probably prefer a windowsill with a view though…

Cat most likely wouldn’t bother with those windows as pp said.

My cats have jumped out of those windows. Bstrds.

I can't offer any practical suggestions, but wanted to share that your husbands concerns are valid!

We got our cat from rescue a couple of years ago, and he was so desparate to get out after a fortnight cooped up indoors that he jumped out of the downstairs toilet window id forgotten to close. Also liked to sit on the open ledge of the upstairs window (not the sill- the actual edge of the open part!). Never jumped out but would have been so easy for him to slip with all the upcoming and glass surfaces.

I have a covered litter tray in a bathroom that doesn’t have a window and odour is really not an issue. I use a clumping sawdust litter and clean out once or twice a day.

DrAmanitaPhalloides · 09/05/2026 09:05

I have a covered litter box too but given the bathroom needs ventilation after showers etc I still need to open the window regularly.

I've had two cats who have jumped out of similar windows, and several who did not.

It very much depends on the individual cat.

Screens are the way to go.

tiramisugelato · 09/05/2026 10:23

My cats would definitely jump out of there, especially the younger one. You need a screen on if you’re going to have the windows open and the cats aren’t allowed out.

BillieWiper · 09/05/2026 10:41

Why can't they go out of the window? If it's because it's too high they'll judge that and not jump out.

giovannispatchcock · 09/05/2026 10:45

Jumping out of the bathroom window was my cat’s main way of getting in and out of the house when we were out! Our kitchen roof was underneath so they could do it safely. If you have a big drop, then a screen is a good idea. Or making sure you only open it a little way so the cat can’t fit through.

DrAmanitaPhalloides · 09/05/2026 13:37

Any recommendations for screens? Something strong she can't claw thru.

The bathroom is on the second storey and a big drop. Its also about reassurance for my DD who would never forgive me if something happened to her DCat!!

I'm a big fan of Flat cats screens and have several fitted on various windows. The added bonus is that, as well as DCat not being able to get out, flies and mosquitos can't get in.
