How to hide the smell of cat?

We got our kitten yesterday, she’s only 9 weeks old and is still scared as expected. She didn’t eat her dinner but when I came down this morning she had eaten through the night, therefore leaving her food out is something we will have to do. As I was walking downstairs the smell of cat was so strong, I’m guessing it’s the food, is there a way to mask the smell?

What do you mean a smell of cat, of the actual cat? At that age she will have hardly any smell unless from the litter tray and being tiny she will have done a tiny piddle or number 2 which you just scoop up a flush down toilet. Do you mean the smell of the cat food itself

She’s very little at the moment, so will need smaller meals more frequently. Her stomach is tiny.. This will change.

Are you using dry food? It still smells, but less than wet. Wet food should be cleared away if she didn’t eat it all after a set time. Which helps.

As for what else can be done. Not much. As you don’t want strong smells putting her off.

I found the litter tray smell difficult, so we got a covered one, which was better. Don’t flush the waste down the toilet. Bag it and bin it.
UK water companies state that dog and cat poo contain parasites, bacteria, and pathogens that our sewage treatment isn’t equipped to fully eliminate

Which food are you feeding her?

I just open the windows every morning to let a bit of fresh air blow through to get rid of the cat food smell. Works for me.

Just posting a screenshot from Anglian Water re flushing cat or dog poo.

Don’t flush the poo. You’ll get used to the smell of the food.

Yes the food

Feed her better quality food. Katkin is cooked fresh and doesn’t stink like supermarket food. What are you feeding her?

I found the Whiskers brand to be particularly strong.

I read that it’s the smell rather than the taste which prompts cats to eat. They tend to like to eat little and often. I use the pouches and only dole out what I imagine to be a small mouse sized amount of food at a time for my adult cat.

Cats often don’t like food that’s been left out a while. They also like their food at body temp. A kitten will be on many small meals a day for some time.

You will find probably you will be trying out different brands as many cats seem to chop and change what they like (again it’s the smell they get bored of). My cat is currently eating two different brands of the fish varieties.

So experiment with different brands and poss change the location of where you put the food. You will have just discovered an airflow from where you feed goes up the stairs.

For a previous cat, I used to put a piece of kitchen roll over his plate - he could knock it off easily if he wanted to eat, plus it kept the flies off in the summer.

Whiskers stinks and isn’t good for her. I give mine Thrive or Almo Nature which doesn’t smell, and the resulting poo doesn’t really either. They both do complete kitten food.
