Travelling with a cat.

We took our boy away at Christmas for a few days, a bit of an experiment to see how he’d do. He settled really well at the cottage we stayed at. The only thing that didn’t work too well was him being a bit noisy travelling in his carrier. He wasn’t upset, just noisy!

Anyway, we’d like to take him on other trips, and wondered if anyone has ever used those expanding carry crates. if so, would you recommend them?

We have a soft dog crate in the boot for our cats! It’s big enough they can walk around and jump up and it’s also comes in handy in whilst on holiday as we put it outside so they can get fresh air!

I take my cat to my parents to stay. She travels really well. She has an isofix carrier for the journey as it’s motorway and I want her properly secure. It’s smaller than her usual carrier. But she actually prefers it and will sit in it of her own volition. I think she feels more secure in a smaller carrier. The journey takes about 4 hours and she’s as good as gold.

@Favouritefruits Our car is a saloon, so the boot is out of the question, but thanks for the suggestion.

Posted before I finished - fat fingers! 🤣

@Toddlerteaplease His carrier is pretty small anyway, which is why I’m thinking of one of those that could open out to cover the back seat. Thanks for your suggestion
though!

No advice on travel I’m afraid as they travel by train, but interested in which cottage accepts cats and how did you find it. Our son and his partner bring their house cat when they come to visit and she settles so quickly, using her litter without any issues but I’d love to have a cottage break with them.

MillicentMaybe · 02/05/2026 13:53

@jenthehen It was in the north of Scotland, booked through Booking-dot-com, and I ticked the pet-friendly box in the search.

@MillicentMaybe thank you 🙌🏼

I’m not sure I’d want to risk taking my cat on holiday. The chances of escape are too high. My parents house is cat proof so that’s ok.

MillicentMaybe · 02/05/2026 15:09

@Toddlerteaplease It’s just the two of us, so no worries about my cat going walkabout. 🙂

We’ve stayed in lots of cat friendly accommodation, the best is any of the ‘forest holiday’ locations, my girls love going, it’s so peaceful and cat friendly. We have also used Vrbo as they have some cottages that state ‘cats welcome’ if you want more info plz PM!

Watching with interest as I’m planning to take my girl to the Lakes as have a very short notice break, and the neighbours who usually feed her are away, and no vacancy at the cattery.
what do people recommend for first time away from home with a cat? I’m taking a litter tray for her and I’ve got a leash. Not planning on letting her out without the leash. Grateful for any advice!

I got mine a buggy as they love going out, I really don’t think you need anything special apart from their usual beds and blankets that smell of home and toys as they obviously can’t roam outside! My girls don’t mind the car or new places as they’ve done it from being kittens hopefully you’ll all have a lovely time ☺️
