Searching for the unicorn of cat litter

I’m on the hunt for the perfect cat litter. Unscented, clumping, not dusty, low maintenance.

Any suggestions? Happy to spend my way out of this challenge.

World's Best, I swear by it.

I 💯 agree with this and I think we’ve tried them all over the past 25 years

GlomOfNit · 24/04/2026 20:00

World's Best has been a game-changer for us. It's ever so slightly dusty but nothing that anyone but the fussiest person would notice, it clumps beautifully, the pee clumps can be flushed, it neutralises smells, it lasts and lasts.

I assume it's fairly sustainable as it's an organic substance. It's bloody pricy but I get it on Amazon for a lot less than a walk-in pet shop (sorry, walk-in pet shops!).

Definitely crystals. It’s not clumping but it is THE best litter ever. Wee soaks into the crystals, they turn yellow, they absorb the smell, and last ages! The bag says 1 month, I change mine every week but I have a very strong urine indoor tom cat. When I only had my demure girl cat, the litter would easily last 3 weeks.

I've found crystals recently and it's just the best. What I love is that it never smells and is so easy to use the scooper to remove poo . It's a bit more expensive but worth it .

FateAmenableToChange · 24/04/2026 20:11

I use the Tigerino Crystals Cat Litter Colourful – Sensitive (Unscented) from zooplus. Ive tried all the rest and i find it the best for containing the smell. Doesnt clump but the wee gets absorbed and you can use the scoup to flush the poos. Stupidly expensive though.

The unicorn arrives next week. She is a divine little rescue and practically perfect in every way. She deserves only the best! Pics to follow when she’s safely in our arms.

That’s wonderful and I’m looking forward to it but I thought you were in possession of some kind of baby caticorn/unikitty and wanted to fill it’s litter tray lol 😂
I’ll check back next week on your actual kitten 😋

I have VanCat which works well for my long haired kittens.

TemporaryCatSlave · 24/04/2026 20:31

Just be aware if it is a young kitten, clumping isn't recommended it in case they eat some and it swells in their stomach (not uncommon with some of the plant based litter as they do smell like food!).

I use Katkin Scoop (which is clumping so might not be Ok if kitty is little). I did a not very scientific trial of a few different types last year and this is definitely the best. Not dusty at all, clumps well , last a month with top ups and not much tracking - if some does get out its easy to see and sweep or hoover up.

My cat wont use crystals at all, he literally crossed his legs and hung on for hours looking distressed. The fine grained sandy ones were a nightmare, smelled awful, didn't clump very well and turned little foster cats white feet a dirty grey. I found all the wood and paper based ones smelled bad quite quickly and weren't great for absorbing wee. Clay was OK for smell but very dusty to pour out and I had white paw prints on my wooden floors.

WyrdHag · 24/04/2026 22:27

Not sure it ticks your boxes but I use CatSan Smart packs - the litter is rolled into a tray liner with an absorbent base. Incredibly quick and easy to change and no smell. It does track a bit but not sure if that's the litter or my cats being pains in the arse!

Cats Best for us here. We have 2 Maine Coons and a Ragdoll so there is a lot of activity in the tray. Provided you pick out the wee cakes and poo regularly, it lasts ages and doesn't smell. It is pricey but I think it's worth it.

Another with two Maine Coons and using Cats Best. I have it very deep in the trays, so nothing ever reaches the bottom of the tray. Wee balls are so easy to scoop out - I often think of the “my husband ate a fatball” thread when I scoop them out 😹. Poos are also easy to scoop out.

It tracks a little bit, they’re big cats, but nothing a quick whizz with handheld hoover can’t sort out.

This is absolutely amazing. It’s tiny crystals and you just remove solids and give the tray a good stir once a day. I change it once a month and can’t believe how easy it is compared to all the faffing about I’ve done over the years. It smells no different at the end of the month to when it was fresh. Very little tracks and I can’t quite believe how good it is.

Another vote for Cats Best here. No smells and a bag lasts a long while.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 25/04/2026 02:37

Catsan non clumping

ruethewhirl · 25/04/2026 10:51

The best one we've ever used is EverClean which we buy from Amazon. It's the only clumping litter we've ever used that doesn't send up clouds of dust and trigger my allergies (unlike Catsan!), and it clumps effectively too. I buy the scented version as I like the smell, but they probably do an unscented version.

neilshair · 29/04/2026 10:14

I use Catsan active fresh (the one in the box) but it’s not easily available. Tesco sell it but don’t always have it in stock so Amazon as a back up but it’s usually far more expensive there.

ChuffingNoraah · 29/04/2026 10:19

Cat’s best, very deep in a hooded tray with a litter mat, absolutely zero tracking.

For odour, I reckon diet has a more significant impact, our rescue stank to high heaven when she arrived eating Whiskas, now minimal smell which clears almost immediately on Harrington’s wet pouches (best balance of cost vs high meat content IMO) and Scumbles salmon dry food.

BlowersDaughter · 29/04/2026 13:17

For anyone interested we’ve gone for Cat’s Best Clumping and so far very happy with it. Bit hard to sift with the scoop but ticks all the other boxes

She is amazing. Not a kitten (an 18 month old rescue) but very small and won’t grow bigger. No tail. A TOTAL heartbreaker.

Meet Minnie.

We are besotted.

Hello Minnie!!

Rescues are the absolute best. My first was a very small 2yr old but my goodness she was fiesty (to foxes, vets, tomcats and cat carriers) but a gorgeous bundle of furry purrs to us. Congratulations ❤
