Can I flush cats mess down the toilet ?

Just saw someone saying this on a thread. I always thought that as there's usually litter attached when scooping you can't do this ? I tie it in little bags and leave next to the litter tray till I put a bin bag out, I put out a bin bag once a day, so if I could do this it would be a lot more hygienic

Good to see a proper discussion on this topic. I'm not a pet owner but I'm horrified by the approach of a lot of local dog owners who come out with poo bags and then think it's ok to use them and dump them in whatever bin is out on bin day. They know full well that green bins are garden waste only and blue bins are paper, glass, card etc. Doesn't stop them. The park is 4 mins from here

My cat shits directly into the toilet... I don't plan on stopping her.
Surely, if she had toxoplasmosis (which I'm confident she doesn't) then the risk to humans would be higher if she were off shitting in flowerbeds elsewhere. And what about humans with tox? It's one of the TORCH infections which is why we're twitchy about it in healthcare; and I know cats are the only animal hosts where the parasites reproduce. But most humans with tox are asymptomatic and we don't stop those with a diagnosis using regular toilets.

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 18/04/2026 23:25

I thought you could, but no you shouldn't, because cat parasites are different from human parasites. I learned that on this very board.

So the person that said it goes into the rivers and then we take it from the rivers for drinking water was wrong ?

Rivers flow downhill. Water is extracted near the start of the river for us to drink. Further down the hill, sewage is discharged. The river can't flow backwards because of the hill, so the poo germs don't get into the drinking water.

AFingerofFudge · 18/04/2026 23:34

I blame Auntie Mabel & Pippin for making people think it was ok.

I don't think tox spreads through human poo.

Surely there's a shit ton literally of chemicals going down the toilet via people on various drugs/meds? And manky wet wipes, etc etc.

You flush wet wipes?🙁

Oh gosh! I've been putting cat poo in the toilet for years. I thought putting it in the bin would be worse in case a bag broke. I scoop so there's no litter with it. I just thought human poo is in the toilet so a tiny cat poo would be fine. It means it's not sat around festering in a bin anywhere. I didn't want the kids finding a bag with poo in by accident. I assumed that sewage is treated so it would be ok? I've checked my sewage companies website and there's nothing about not putting cat faeces down the loo. No food oils, but nothing about faeces.

Actually so have I and so has my DM. I had no idea you couldn’t do it. It’ll be bagged in bin from now on.

I don’t. I’ve seen fat balls or whatever they’re called the huge balls with wipes in them. In sewers.

Fatberg. Fat balls are bird food.

TurnipsAndParsnips · 19/04/2026 22:10

I’ve always flushed cat poo. I was always told that you should never put faeces in the bin.

DrFoxtrot · 19/04/2026 22:32

Everyone saying they flush their cat poo, just do a quick google search asking ‘can I flush cat poo in the UK’ and you will get the info you need. It sounds like thousands of cat owners are probably doing this so god knows how water companies are going to get habits to change!

Why were you told not to put faeces in the bin?

Scotland releases plenty into rivers. England releases plenty into the sea

Indeed, and guess where fresh water rivers ultimately end up?

You might want to read context, before thinking you made a point.

DMIL has a stoma and was told never to put the poo in a bin. I followed this advice with nappies (where possible), removing the poo before binning the nappy, and assumed the same was for cat poo.

This is like a bottle of bleached saying “don’t drink the bleach.” It is a warning that should not be required because it is bloody obvious. We all know about water treatments, and that it is designed for human waste. Not your cat’s. It’s just idiotic behaviour.

This! The way some people think that animals are people is insane.

CalicoCaterina · 20/04/2026 06:32

This isn't something I have ever done personally. Some litters are marketed as flushable so it is a perfectly reasonable question to ask. Both CatsBest and WorldsBest are two I've used that market as flushable cat litter.

I just scoop and use dog poo bags, putting it in my normal bin which is collected fortnightly, no hideous smell from the bin even in the height of summer.

I don't buy wet wipes let alone flush them but I'm aware some people do

ThatFairy · 20/04/2026 08:06

I buy flushable ones @viques

They still shouldn't be flushed because they don't disintegrate and clog the sewers!

Even AI understands this is not a good idea
