Recommendations for wet and dry food for a cat with IBD

My 14yr old neutered boy cat has just been diagnosed with IBS / IBD so I will need to start him on a special diet.

He has been having Purina sensitive dry food, with some Core grain free mixed in, which he likes. He does love Purina Gourmet wet food, but I need to completely change the wet food he's been eating. I have tried in the past to get him onto better wet food but he's very fussy.

Does anyone have any recommendations for both wet and dry food suitable for cats with IBD? I probably can withdraw wet food as he does drink a lot of water (blood tests and scans don't show diabetes or kidney problems).

I have recently discovered raw feed Purrform and they do a 100% rabbit one which may be worth a try as many cats become intolerant to chicken and grains.

If you PM me an email address I can send you a referral code, it’s not much but could really be worth trying.

Apparently rabbit is very gentle on the guts.

thank you @RandomMess - will pm you

He did once bring a baby rabbit home when he was younger (photo below) - he might have been trying to tell be something! Luckily the rabbit was unhurt and I took it to a rabbit sanctuary place the next day 😊

Aww poor thing. My 12-year old cat was diagnosed with this a couple of years ago and lost a lot of weight. We’ve spent a fortune on many different foods with him and the brand he resisted least was Royal Canine Gastrointestinal. He likes the biscuits but has gone off the pouches as he is also extremely fussy. We also tried the Sensitivity Control pouches which he was tolerating, but not so much anymore. He has to have a steroid tablet each day which helps keep his condition under control although he has the odd flare-up. So at the moment he has 2 pouches of just normal wet food that he likes, plus a bowl of the special biscuits and this is working at the moment. Hope you find something that works for your boy.

Thanks @SpaceTurtle , I'll try some of those.

He is on steroids atm, but i asked if he could have the 2- week injection rather than tablets for now (only diagnosed after a scan today). I've never been successful in administering tablets, but I might have to find a way to do it if he needs steroids long term. How do you manage with your cat?

Administering the tablets used to be a 2 person job! But my cat sitter suggested trying Greenies Feline Pill Pockets (I order from Amazon) which are like a soft type of cat treat that you smush the tablet into and he loves them. Makes life a lot easier.

Great tip - off to shop Amazon now.

Cat One loves Hills Prescription i/d dry food. I tried the wet food but not one cat would touch it without dry food sprinkled on it. Since being on it he vomits much, much less and has gained weight, so it’s worth the million AUD it costs.

Oh, and the cat on the Hills Prescription i/d is a tuxie. I like when the bag has the picture of the right cat to feed.

@RandomMess - he's loving the raw rabbit food - thank you for the recommendation. I need to give it a few more days to check if any adverse reactions, but I'm hopeful. He's also liking Purina Proplan hypoallergenic dry food, which isn't too expensive, so I'm hoping that will be okay for him too.

He's been more energetic and playful over the last couple of days, so the steroid injection to help with inflammation and the dietary changes seem to be doing some good 🤞

Mine are like savages with the Purrform, it’s a bit scary 🤣
