Older Cat Getting Frail

Our cat is around 16 years old she has always been very timid and hates other cats and dogs. She is deteriorating as in just being a very old lady that is delicate and frail. Stares at the wall for hours, she fell asleep with her head in her food bowl recently. She has lost a little weight, her breathing is a little rapid at times, she likes being brushed and purrs when this is done and she will eat though a little fussier. Seems to like being alone a lot which is a big change she used to follow us around or sit next to us all the time until a few months ago.

She gets extremely distressed going to the vet, if I thought she was in pain I would take her obviously. But the few times she has been she has been genuinely traumatised.

I have never had to care for a pet who is going towards end of life. DH and I have discussed it and we think she isn’t at a time to be put to sleep and we are hoping when the time comes she will peacefully pass on at home. But how do you know the time to intervene if it isn’t totally obvious.

Would welcome any advice from people with experience of older cats, we think she is 16 but as she was from a shelter it was just an estimated age so she could be older.

Oh, I’m so sorry @VivaciousCurrentBun. She was obviously much loved and had a lifetime of love with your family

I’m not offended @TalulahJP We spent a lot of last night looking at photos of her and I didn’t realise DS has so many clips of her. He was only 12 when we got her and was so attached watching him so upset has been awful. I found DH and him crying together upstairs last night. I try and look for positives and thought I’m glad I have men in my life who can cry.

I’m so sorry. You sound like a lovely caring owner and you have done the right thing for your cat by PTS to end suffering. Treasure your lovely memories.

So sorry for your loss . They leave behind such a big gap . It does seem like you have lots of photos / videos so they will be good to keep .

Cats do become such a part of our lives and of our day to day routine . You gave yours a long and happy life .

I have had several cats , a couple of which had long term health issues and required regular vet visits .

My current cat is quite elderly too and unlike our previous cats , she is not a fan of the vets . I have been given Gabepentin ( sedative ) for her should she need to go again , as she was scratching and hissing at everyone the last time I took her .

It is difficult to know what is a decline due to old age / what needs more urgent medical input . Cats also seem to isolate themselves, when not feeling 100 per cent .

You did your absolute best for your cat

and decisions made will be dependent on the personality / nature of the cat too . All we can do is try to ensure they are not suffering , which you did .

Etsy has lots and lots of pet memorabilia . Some of it was a bit too “ cutesy” for me but I did get a plain wooden mini plaque with my cat’s name on it . I think it was actually a Christmas tree decoration , but isn’t particularly Christmassy. I also got a small slate plaque with mini metal pole to put in the garden for where my cat’s ashes have been scattered .
