Poor Angus - Losing Some of His Ear Today

I feel so upset. Angus has had an ongoing issue with one of his ears. Vet isn’t sure what it is. He scratches the area and then it bleeds profusely. We can see something on the edge of his ear and vet isn’t sure if it’s a cyst or something more sinister so part of his ear is being removed today and sent to histology to check it’s not cancerous.

I know it has to be done but my poor beautiful boy 😢 He’s crying for his breakfast and it’s awful giving the other two cats their breakfast and separating him as he obviously can’t have anything to eat this morning.

Bit of a handhold needed today.

Aw poor Angus! 😱💐

Definitely better than risking things though, and he won't miss it in the long run. In fact, it could give him even more character and possibly just the hint of a rakish charm like a hero in a romance novel!

Icequeen01 · 10/04/2026 07:53

Thanks @Allergictoironing I will keep telling myself that. He’s known as the neighbourhood’s pretty boy so it will be a new look for him 😊

He’s lovely! My childhood cat got in a fight and lost a bit of his ear. Made him even more special.

Breadcat24 · 10/04/2026 07:57

Angus is so gorgeous because he is an absolute sweetheart. Beauty is not just fur deep with him!

Defo this. Poor Angus, and more poor you actually, such a worry when they are unwell, but all they care about are dreamies, lol. It will likely give him a unique feature that makes him even more handsome. Hand hold for today and let us know how he is later

TinyMouseTheatre · 10/04/2026 08:05

It’s horrible when they have something wrong but you’re absolutely doing the right thing and I agree that it could possibly make him even more hamdsome, if that’s possible. Plus he still has an excellent name for a DCat Smile

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 10/04/2026 10:07

Poor Angus - but definitely the best thing to see what’s going on. Our orange boy is off to the vet later today too, just routine for his boosters, but I feel anxious on his behalf, so I totally get it!

SerafinasGoose · 10/04/2026 10:17

You’re giving him the best care. I know it’s tough.

I once had a cat called Angus. He was also
ginger!

Toddlerteaplease · 10/04/2026 12:34

Poor darling. He will still be the magnificent beast he is now. Hand hold.

Icequeen01 · 11/04/2026 09:59

Thank you for the handhold yesterday, it was so appreciated.

When I dropped off Angus I was told he would need to be kept indoors for 2 weeks and to also wear a collar for 2 weeks. I hadn’t realised it would be for so long and this really worried me as Angus is a really highly strung cat who reacts badly if we even close our kitchen door stopping him from getting to the catflap. So I spent the day in a state of high anxiety of the impending incarceration.

When I picked up Angus you can imagine my relief when I was told my lovely vet was able to just take a small triangle out of his ear and didn’t have to stitch the wound as she used some sort of electronic pen to, I guess, cauterise the edge. This meant no collar and only staying indoors for 2 days.

At 3am this morning Angus was going beyond crazy and had the whole house up. The GA had worn off and my DS was up with him as he had tried to jump out of his open bedroom window 😱 (the cat not my DS!) and it was clear that Angus was desperate for the toilet but just wouldn’t use the massive litter tray I had bought him. I know people will disagree with my decision but I let him into the back garden where he did his business and bless his heart he came straight back in through the cat flap and curled up on our bed where he has slept peacefully ever since. Luckily the weather is chilly again so he’s not so desperate to be out all the time.

So Angus is doing well. His wound is much less than I was expecting and now we just need to wait for the histology report. I’m holding onto the fact my vet didn’t take as much as first thought so may be this is a good sign she thinks it’s not cancerous, but I know that’s my wishful thinking 🤞🤞

I’d definitely have let him out. He’d only hurt himself going mad! None of mine ever tolerated collars!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 11/04/2026 11:33

I'd have let him out too tbh. Far better to have an unstressed Angus 😻

Breadcat24 · 11/04/2026 15:31

@Icequeen01 Still beautiful
Reminds me of those notches they take out of cats' ears in portugal to show they have been neutered. We can across a cat with 3 he must have been very special!

Icequeen01 · 11/04/2026 16:09

I’m relieved to hear that you would all have let him out too. He’s outside again at the moment but staying in the garden and sitting on top of our arbour. He is relaxed and enjoying the fresh air and not bothering his ear at all. So much better than him literally crawling up the wall to get out if we kept him inside. If I thought he was still feeling the effects of the GA I would have continued to keep him inside but he really is fine.

@Breadcat24I said exactly the same thing to the vet nurse. He looks like he’s been TNR’d 😂 His new bad boy look 😂

I would have let him out too Smile

learieonthewildmoor · 12/04/2026 03:29

I’m so glad it’s just a little nick in his ear. He’s so beautiful!
Of course you had to let him out. No harm done.
Fingers crossed for a good report back from the test.

Icequeen01 · 16/04/2026 15:35

I thought I would give you an update as the histology report is back for Angus.

It’s not cancer 🎉 It’s a haematoma and completely benign. Advised by my vet to get some Aniwell Filtabac to put on his ears when it’s sunny outside as he does like to sunbath a lot but apart from that he’s home and dry! I also heard from Petplan today that they will reimburse us £650 of the £900 the surgery cost which is also great news.

Thanks again for the handhold. Angus’s ear is healing well and it doesn’t bother him one bit which is a relief.

@Icequeen01 fantastic

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 16/04/2026 21:48

Great news - so pleased to hear it. 😻

WotthehellMehitabel · 17/04/2026 08:00

Hooray for the good result! Thank you for the reminder - recently adopted a kitten with a white ear and was thinking 'what a drag, I'll have to put sun block on it in the summer...'. This reminds me not to stint on it...

Oh, and I'd have let him out too. We know our cats. But it's understandable that the vets have to give the most cautious advice.

Happy healing, Angus, you gorgeous hunk!

Allergictoironing · 17/04/2026 08:44

Great news about Angus.

My cousin inherited 3 cats when she bought a farm, one was mostly white with some black and they had to have her ears mostly removed due to cancer. The former owners had ignored the large darkish red lesions and growths on both ears, she was "only" a yard cat kept to keep the rodents down 😡. Then again, in that part of the west country many farmers thought a hungry cat would be a better mouser so didn't feed their yard cats, despite the fact that they are actually better mousers if they are fed a decent amount.

learieonthewildmoor · 17/04/2026 22:18

Excellent news.
