Cat resistant carpet

Has anyone managed to find the unicorn that is carpet that best survives cat claws? I have persistent scratchy fuckers. They go out, there are scratchers available but apparently nothing is as good as the stair carpet or the bits outside doors.

Watching this thread to see if you get any answers @DontKillSteve as this is sooo relatable, my cat is not interested in the scratcher, I think she is of the opinion why use a scratcher when you have a carpet , same as her bed, I have bought the cosiest comfiest beds but she's not interested, the sofa and anywhere else is apparently better 😂 Good luck!

Also following with interest. My stairs carpet has been completely ruined but there's no point replacing it while evil tortie is still alive because she isn't the least bit sorry and will immediately do it again.

@FionnulaTheCooler 😂😂

I asked about this when we were buying carpets years ago. You need a cut pile carpet not a loop pile. With loop pile, their claws will pull and break the loops and it'll look terrible, whereas with cut pile there are no loops. So their scratching has a lot less effect on the look of the carpet, and is also less appealing as a scratch post.

We no longer have carpets! We have wooden flooring and rugs.

Great advice @Twelvetimes I think wooden flooring is the way forward 😁😼

Carpet tiles at least let you replace the damaged ones without having to replace the whole floor. And yes, cut pile, not loops.

I have a short pile one but they’ve pulled out clumps- bald patches everywhere.

I wonder if the sisal stuff would be better. DH likes carpet upstairs.

Sisal is used for cat scratching posts, so they'll love it!

Yes but will it hold up better?

Since I got cardboard scratchers my cats leave the stairs alone. I would love to have discovered this the first time we replaced the carpet on the stairs.
