Help me solve the mystery of the magpie!

Ok so I’m actually quite freaked out by this little incident.
im not sure where to post but it somehow involves the cat so I reckon here is a good place!

so I left the house with the dogs for a short walk. Everything was in order. Came home to the kitchen in carnage and the cat looking suspicious m. Suspected a mouse etc

walked back into the kitchen to see a huuuuge magpie on the top of the kitchen counter.

he flew out and is completely uninjured. Seems to keep flying back to very close to the kitchen door.
there’s only 2 possibilities - my fairly young black male cat brought him in through the cat flap without any kind of a fight (no feathers anywhere) or he flew in last night when the stable door was open and somehow we didn’t notice?!

And now he’s outside watching the house and freaking g me out 🤣🤦‍♀️

any ideas? Is it possible my tiny little boy cat did this?

Could your cat have brought in a young magpie fledgling, and the large one is the parent trying to get it back? Does your cat look proud of himself?

My big soft cat brought a live smallish magpie into my tiny bedroom at 5am once, it flew around the room perching like the raven in the Nevermore poem on the head of my bed. I screamed and pulled the duvet over my head. Eventually I removed the cat and my teenage son ejected the magpie. The parent magpies have never forgotten or forgiven.

One of my cats once caught a magpie. I saw her, it was flying quite low along an alleyway and she jumped into the air and grabbed it. She was a good hunter in general. She wrestled with it a bit and let it go because I think she was a bit surprised she caught it, and what are you going to do with a magpie really!

So your cat could have got lucky and caught it.

My cat isn't a particularly good hunter but she brought a live, unharmed, young magpie in through the cat flap once.

She was acting like a cat upto no good trying to look behind an indoor plant pot. I moved it carefully expecting a mouse and a magpie was sat there looking at me!

It flew off when I opened the door. I've no idea how she squeezed it through the quite small cat flap.

My tiny ginger cat brought a magpie into our kitchen through the cat flap once. The magpie wasn’t happy but seemed unharmed.

They are corvids - really intelligent birds who are very curious. I had one inside last summer after I left a patio door open - came in the back and ended up in the lounge at the front of the house perched on a bookcase.
(edited to add that I don’t have a cat!)

Thanks everyone! So it sounds like it’s possible he did it!

the Magpie is now watching us from a nearby tree 😳

Your cat had better sleep with one eye open for a while 😆

We had a magpie for a while - rescued fledgling named Fagin. He wasn’t naturally afraid of the cats ( of which we had 3 at the time) and would follow them around, which definitely unnerved them!

We had to send him off to local nature reserve as he was too tame for an urban setting- not everyone appreciates a fully grown magpie landing on their shoulder to see if they had food

I would!!

My cat has brought both a wood pigeon and a rabbit in through the catflap before now. Bloody cats!

helpfulperson · 08/04/2026 15:18

I'm another one whose cat has brought in a very alive very cross magpie through the cat flap.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 08/04/2026 15:21

He could also have hopped in because he knows that cat in house = meat and kibble in bowls on floor.

It depends upon whether the cat gets an reenactment of the Dambusters raid next time he's in the garden or whether the flock stick to talking at him.

I would!!

One neighbour was absolutely thrilled and was somewhat crushed to discover he was not actually a second Dr Doolittle!

ChasingTheDuck · 08/04/2026 15:54

I'm just here to see what happens to said cat next time he goes out. If all is well, I assume magpie popped in for a visit. If your cat is attacked by said watching magpie he's in serious trouble as they don't forget and can hold grudges for ages.

Chemenger · 08/04/2026 16:35

My brother’s next door neighbour’s cat was discovered trying to bring a seagull through the cat flap. He regularly consumed rabbits under their bed in the middle of the night. Cats are lovely.

Chemenger · 08/04/2026 16:40

Just remembered that the seagull cat successfully brought in and ate a pheasant.

longtompot · 08/04/2026 17:04

Our cats managed to bring in an adult, and very much alive pigeon in through the cat flap once! The kids were quite shocked when they came down one morning 😆There was bird poo everywhere!
