Anxious traveller who poos and wees in the crate

MrCat is off to the vet in a couple of hours for his jabs. I generally take him to the vet in the morning before his breakfast, and he generally poos and wees in the crate because he is so stressed. But today he is going in the afternoon, so he has already had his morning poo. I gave him a larger portion for breakfast today, thinking that he would probably miss his lunch. But he’s a greedy little fatty lumpkin. He’s waiting by his bowl for his lunch. Do I feed him, or will that trigger more poos and wees? Or even a puke in the crate?

I don't have a short term solution, but you could look into the hormone calming diffusers for the future (it's called felliway, or something like that!)

You thread title is funny to read without noticing the forum it's in

Yeah in my cats this is stress related not food related.

Leavesandthings · 07/04/2026 20:53

I think a lot of cats will do a stress wee going to the vets in a carrier unfortunately.

Feliway makes no difference. I tried smearing his catnip toy with likylix today. MrCat licked off the likylix, crying all the time, and then ignored the toy. He pooed just as I pulled back onto our drive. Bloody cat. Why on earth do we love the little bastards so much?

Hope that's over for the next year.

We started using a mobile vet for this reason with our previous cat. So much less stress and cost about the same

What if your cat needs surgery? MrCat has had to have a tooth out and eyelid surgery on both eyes.

Maybe a different carrier and going out more often will help . Our cat used to bury herself in her carrier she now has an open wire type and is fine in the car and only starts to bury herself when you get into the vets . Granted she has never been stressed enough to pee

@Dilbertian We use the mobile for vaccinations etc, also diagnosis- but we also have her registered at a local vet if the mobile one says she needs in patient care

I tape a puppy pad to the inside of the carrier to contain any mishaps. You could also consider putting the carrier inside a (clean, empty) litter tray in the car, in case anything leaks out of the carrier.
